About This Pub

You know, when I think about Calypso Restaurant, it's got this real warm Caribbean charm that makes it a brilliant spot for a get-together with mates. The food's a highlight for many – think succulent jerk chicken that falls off the bone or tasty patties that leave you wanting more, all set against live music and a quirky atmosphere that gets everyone in the mood. It's especially ace for bottomless brunches or just popping in for a cold beer and some soul food by the water. But, to be fair, it's not all sunshine; I've heard from a few that the grub can sometimes be a bit disappointing, like dry or bland dishes that don't live up to the hype, and there are gripes about things like sticky tables or mix-ups with the bill. Still, with such a strong overall rating, it's worth checking out if you're after some good times and flavoursome eats – just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a whale of a time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely banging, especially the Caribbean dishes like jerk chicken and red snapper – it's full of flavour and hits the spot for anyone craving a taste of the islands.
  • The atmosphere is spot on, with live music, reggae tunes, and a quirky setup that makes it a fun spot for a night out or a relaxed drink by the water.
  • Staff are really friendly and attentive, always on hand to sort things out and make you feel welcome, which adds to the whole experience.
  • It's great for groups or families, with a large menu, child-friendly vibes, and brilliant value options like the bottomless brunch for £35.
Cons
  • The food can be hit or miss; some folks have found it dry, tasteless, or just not up to par, which is a shame if you're expecting authentic Caribbean flavours.
  • Cleanliness isn't always top-notch, with a few mentions of sticky tables and a generally okay atmosphere that could do with a bit more attention.
  • There have been issues with billing, like confusion over the check, which might put a dampener on an otherwise enjoyable visit.
  • If you're new to Caribbean cuisine, it might not be the best introduction, as a couple of reviews suggested it fell short of expectations.

We was in the area and decided to try Calypso as the reviews was really good for this place. I would like to say the staff were really nice and attentive. The cleanliness and atmosphere was okay. However the food was awful. If you have not tried Caribbean food before this is not the place to go. The food was bland, tasteless with no seasoning or flavour and you can tell the food was microwaved. I will not be returning

The food is incredible, especially if you like chicken dishes from the Caribbean! If not, you'll still love it haha! A really quirky place with a dragon on / through the wall, and they play vibing Reggae tunes for both indoor and outdoor patrons! For the outdoor eaters, you are beside a quiet and relaxing canal, awesome in the sun if you like that sort of thing! Delicious food though, seriously good! Highly recommended to try out 👍👍👍

Visited for the bottomless brunch. 2 hours of cocktails and a meal. The food was great. The cocktails came consistently and were fantastic. Worth £35 of anybodies money.

Went for the first time for lunch. Food was 10/10 the red snapper, dumplings and patties were amazing. There was some confusion with the bill but the waitress handled it. Will definitely be returning with family and friends

The food was average at best. Visually, the food looked authentic for the most part. Unfortunately, quite a few items were dry and tasteless. The tables were filthy with the mats actually stuck to the table as they were so sticky. The staff were the best part of the dining experience as they were attentive and provided a good service.
