Boat House in Hitchin

Ah, the Boat House – or as some call it, The Millstream – it's one of those pubs that sounds like a real hidden gem based on the buzz from reviews. From what I've gathered, the atmosphere is spot-on; it's cosy and inviting, perfect for sinking into a chair after a long walk and just chatting away. The food gets plenty of praise too – think hearty portions of things like lamb shank that's generally tender and flavoursome, or a cracking toad in the hole made fresh, along with desserts that hit the sweet spot. It's clear a lot of folks have had cracking meals there, especially the Sunday roasts, which look and taste the part most of the time. On the downside, though, there have been a few gripes; some roasts came out overcooked and dry, which is a bit of a letdown when you're shelling out for it, and the service isn't always top-notch – one person was miffed that the staff couldn't tell an ale from a lager, which might spoil the fun if you're after recommendations. Plus, it's currently closed, so you'll have to hold off on visiting for now. All in all, it seems like a solid choice once it's back open, with more highs than lows, but it's good to go in with realistic expectations and maybe double-check the menu choices.
