About This Pub
Ah, the Boat House – or as some call it, The Millstream – it's one of those pubs that sounds like a real hidden gem based on the buzz from reviews. From what I've gathered, the atmosphere is spot-on; it's cosy and inviting, perfect for sinking into a chair after a long walk and just chatting away. The food gets plenty of praise too – think hearty portions of things like lamb shank that's generally tender and flavoursome, or a cracking toad in the hole made fresh, along with desserts that hit the sweet spot. It's clear a lot of folks have had cracking meals there, especially the Sunday roasts, which look and taste the part most of the time. On the downside, though, there have been a few gripes; some roasts came out overcooked and dry, which is a bit of a letdown when you're shelling out for it, and the service isn't always top-notch – one person was miffed that the staff couldn't tell an ale from a lager, which might spoil the fun if you're after recommendations. Plus, it's currently closed, so you'll have to hold off on visiting for now. All in all, it seems like a solid choice once it's back open, with more highs than lows, but it's good to go in with realistic expectations and maybe double-check the menu choices.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely lovely and welcoming, making it a great spot for a relaxed catch-up with friends
-
Food portions are generous and often delicious, with highlights like the tender lamb shank, fresh toad in the hole, and tasty Sunday roasts that leave you satisfied
-
There's a good selection of drinks, including a wide range of spirits and beers, which adds to the enjoyable experience
Cons
-
Some dishes, like the meats in the Sunday roast, can be overcooked and dry, which is disappointing for the price
-
Service can be a bit hit-or-miss, with instances where staff aren't fully up to speed on things like the difference between ales and lagers
-
The pints might not quite hit the mark – one regular mentioned an issue, possibly with quality or value – and sadly, the place is currently closed, so you can't pop in just yet

Great environment, lovely atmosphere
Sunday Road was lovely, large portions
I had the lamb shank, it was really nice, very tender but a little pale, was expecting a little browner
And the Blondwich was very nice for dessert
A very nice afternoon had with a friend and the food was delicious. We had the toad in the hole the chef 👨🍳 made it fresh from scratch. Was worth the wait with a good beer 🍺 👌 😋.
Sunday roast looked and tasted beautifully. But unfortunately the meats (beef and pork) were overcooked and dry, as they bain-marie the pork and beef for way too long. (for a £20 roast)
Service was a little disappointing as waitress didn't know the difference between an ale or lager and wasn't to bothered to check or ask.
Atmosphere was nice and busy (again we know Sundays are normally) but we thought just lacked a little of that customer service and hospitality smile.
Came here for a meal after a long walk and had a very friendly welcome. There was a good menu with a delicious looking selection of Sunday roasts. I had the sweet potato roast, which was very tasty and got a good portion size. The pub was ean and well maintained.
It's called The Millstream. I'm not sure why it's on here as the Boat House...?
Nice place to head to for a drink and a bite to eat. A wide range of spirits to choose from as well as pints.
I'm a frequent visitor and will no doubt continue to be. My only problem with the place is the pints are quite often dead. It's not just one or two either, it's so rare to get a live pint we genuinely let out a cheer of amazement when we do.
Please please please renovate your glasses and stick to a regular line clean routine. It is such a simple thing that makes a huge difference to the customer. If you're 100% certain those steps are being followed, you need to change out your glasses for new ones. Either way, there is no excuse for a flat pint. Especially not consistently flat pints.
Food has always been great. I've never had to wait long for it, either. Staff are always great, both floor and bar. Currently have a great team on board.
