About This Pub

Ah, the Blue Boar – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a step back in time, right in the heart of York, with that infamous Dick Turpin story adding a cheeky bit of intrigue. I have to say, it's got this genuine old-school charm that really wins you over; the basement with its dungeon-like vibes and that coffin display is a hoot and makes for great conversation over a pint. The drinks are spot on – think cracking real ales and a decent wine list – and at moderate prices, it's easy to while away an afternoon without breaking the bank. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, which is just what you want after a day of exploring. On the flip side, the food menu's a bit sparse, so if you're starving, you might fancy heading elsewhere for more options, and the decor does feel a touch worn, though it suits the traditional feel if you're into that. Overall, it's a solid spot for a laid-back catch-up; I'd pop in for the atmosphere and vibes, but keep expectations realistic for the grub. If you're in York, it's definitely worth a visit for that unique pub experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historical atmosphere is absolutely brilliant, with that Dick Turpin legend and the spooky basement making it a real treat for anyone who loves a bit of York history.
  • The staff are so friendly and welcoming – they really go out of their way to make you feel at home, which adds a lovely personal touch.
  • There's a cracking selection of drinks, like proper real ales and a good wine choice, all at reasonable prices, perfect for settling in for a chat.
  • The food hits the spot for pub grub, with options like the sharing platter being a great deal and nicely priced for a quick bite.
  • They often have entertaining bits like live singers, which can turn a quiet afternoon into a fun session.
Cons
  • The food menu is a bit on the limited side, so if you're after something fancy or a wide variety, you might end up feeling a tad underwhelmed.
  • The interior's a little dated, which some might find charming, but it could do with a freshen-up to keep up with modern tastes.
  • Opening times can vary a bit, and it seems like it might not always be buzzing, especially if you're hoping for a lively evening.

Proper pub. Came to York to enjoy proper old school pubs in historic buildings. Just around the corner from the castle museum we were in need of a decent pint and some pub style food. Pint of cider and IPA to accompany a proper fish finger sandwich. Perfect. Just what we needed after a morning of sightseeing. Menu was reasonably priced. Hard to get a pint for under £7 but the fish finger sandwich was huge, great bread decent amount of chips for £8.90. Lots of locals enjoying a quick drink it’s seems to. Proper pub.

We ordered the sharing platter and it’s definitely a good deal. The basement is pretty cool. Very dungeon like and a coffin ⚰️ for Dick Turpin. Well worth a visit as one of the more interesting 🧐 pubs.

Smashing pub near the York Dungeon. Lovely service and a good range of drinks, reasonably priced. Went on a Sunday afternoon and thoroughly entertained by the singer Simon. Enjoy. M

Nice little pub, A Little dated inside but fits the York vibe better I think. Staff was lovely, greeted us on entry and went above and beyond when serving us at the bar. The food menu is a little limited on choice but what we picked was really nice and fairly priced. The toilets was also clean which I've seen reviews saying otherwise.
