About This Pub

Ah, the Black Horse in Walton – it's one of those neighbourhood pubs that just feels like a second home, doesn't it? I've got to say, what really stands out is how they nail the affordable side of things; their deals, like that build-your-own burger night, are an absolute bargain with massive portions that leave you stuffed and smiling. The atmosphere is spot on too – family-friendly with live sports on the screens and a nice beer garden for when the weather's playing ball. It's clear from the buzz around the place that it's a community favourite, and the staff often go out of their way to make you feel welcome, which is just lovely for a casual catch-up. But, on the flip side, it's not all roses; some folks have mentioned waits for food stretching longer than you'd hope, and there've been a couple of off moments with service that could do with a bit more polish. Still, overall, it's a solid choice if you're after good value and a relaxed setting – I'd pop in for a pint and a chat any day, as long as I plan for a bit of patience!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food deals are fantastic value, like building your own burger for just £5 with huge portions and extras – it's a real treat for the wallet.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's a proper family-friendly spot with a cosy atmosphere, perfect for catching live sports or enjoying a pint in the beer garden.
  • Being at the heart of the community in Walton, it's conveniently located and has great amenities like WiFi and a car park, making it easy to pop in.
Cons
  • Waiting times for food can drag on, like over an hour in some cases, which might put a dampener on your evening.
  • There have been a few instances of unprofessional service, such as staff vaping while serving, which isn't ideal.
  • It might not suit everyone if you're after something more upscale, as it's straightforward and can get busy without much notice.

We visited this pub for the 1st time on Wednesday. It was build your own burger night for £5. Wow, absolutely amazing, the burgers themselves were huge with plenty of chips to go with plus onion rings included and you can double up for 99p, with 3 toppings as well i honestly couldn't believe the value for money there, the pub itself is lovely with a massive outside area all in closed so the kids can run around safely. The staff were amazing and went out thier way to accommodate us as it was really busy and we were a party of 10. They rearranged tables to make sure we were all sat together taking chairs from wherever they could. Absolutely amazing service and food and experience, im so impressed iv literally told everyone i know about the place and im going to book a family birthday there to. Can't recommend this place enough, excellent value for money and the food is just as good. Thanks for a lovely day.

Food was great but didn't like the fact the server was vaping while he brought our food out and collecting glasses etc out in the garden. Was great value but the waiting time was a bit to be desired 1.5 hour wait got told but came in an hour

Last Sunday was my second Greene King experience, the first being The Jolly Fenman near my daughter's SE London University. I was walking around Goodison Park when a young man I'd just met,Josh, suggested we head there to watch the Carabao Cup final. We sat with a couple, Steven and Carrie. All of us fast friends. At halftime I ran to my Airbnb to pick up my son. We enjoyed a delicious beef Sunday Roast. Liverpool may be the friendliest city I've been in and the staff and visitors at The Black Horse exemplified that spirit.

Me and my Partner came here for a Sunday Roast whilst on our trip away to Liverpool. As the pub was only down the road; we decided to give it a go, especially as Greene King down the South is very popular in terms of eating choice. When arriving at the facility, we greeted and stated we had booked for a table of 2, we were around 10 minutes early. The manager then told us to sit wherever we wanted, and around there was multiple tables untidied, unclean and disorganised with chairs around. Whilst staff weren’t doing much. We finally found a clean table in the corner, sat down and ordered off the Greene King App. No service to help us get seated, just sort of ‘do it yourself’ attitude. After then placing an order, where there was limited option (can’t lie, to be only told beef was available we were was disappointed, especially with it only being 2pm on a Sunday), adding extra pigs in blankets and ordering for drink a pint of cider and a large orange juice. After 5 minutes into being seated, one of the staff members came over to say not to use the app within branch. He then stated they had no pigs in blankets, and the cider my partner had selected was unavailable. Overall, the menu hadn’t been updated. They then told us we would get a refund for the pigs, we went up to the bar to receive said refund and we overheard a young lad asking for a straw for his drink just to get told that they didn’t have any, which for anywhere in any decent hospitality venue, it’s unheard of. You can run 5 minutes down the road to get some at Home Bargains, it’s not that difficult to be prepared. Eventually at the end of our course, however the cider they gave my partner was out of date. How did I know this? The cider smelt of vinegar, was super sour and you could smell it a mile away, plus was darker than usual. My partner had to leave mid-way through the meal to throw up in the toilets, after being away for a good 10+ minutes plus. And then, whilst eating our roast dinner: veg was cold, beef was chewy and thin as a sheet of paper, the gravy was like water and to top it all off, wasn’t offered any condiments (e.g horse-radish) to go alongside. For £9, it was a good portion size, but you could tell they didn’t have a Proper chef as the microwave was used a lot. No check back was done at all as well. And when ordering a ‘Large’ size, you wouldn’t think a half-pint would be a large? After finishing our meals, I tried to ask when the barrel was last done, as being someone whose worked in hospitality for 4+ years, I wouldn’t want someone to end up like my partner, however they were too busy to even for me to ask the question to. They just thought we were wanting a refund we already got. We left as soon as possible; as we didn’t want to stay much longer. I’m really sorry to leave this review; but as someone who’s been working in hospitality for a few years, this is not something I would want someone else to experience.
