About This Pub

Ah, Birchwood Farm in Glasshoughton – it's one of those pubs that feels like a reliable old mate, you know? From what I've gathered, it's got this lovely, homely vibe that's perfect for catching up with friends or treating the family to a decent meal without breaking the bank. The staff really stand out; they're chatty and helpful, often going above and beyond to fix any little hiccups or make celebrations feel extra special, which always puts a smile on your face. The food's another winner – think juicy carvery roasts, massive portions of cake, and a menu that's got variety for all tastes, making it a great spot for a satisfying feed. Plus, with handy facilities like parking, WiFi, and even indoor play for the little ones, it's well set up for a hassle-free visit. On the downside, though, it's not all smooth sailing; I've heard of queues stretching on during peak times, which can kill the buzz a bit, and there have been grumbles about missing items on the menu that leave you wanting more. Drinks might cost a smidge more than at your typical local, so if you're just after a quick one, it could feel a touch steep. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back outing in Castleford, but I'd say it's best to pop in on a quieter day to get the full benefit – honest feedback from one pub lover to another!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and go the extra mile to make your visit special, like sorting out meal mix-ups or adding thoughtful touches for occasions.
  • The food is spot on, with delicious carvery options, generous portion sizes, and a varied menu that caters to families and has something for everyone.
  • It's super family-friendly, with facilities like indoor play areas, disabled access, and even EV charging, making it easy for a relaxed day out.
  • Prices are affordable for hearty meals, and it's conveniently located near shopping spots and attractions, with plenty of parking on offer.
  • The atmosphere is welcoming and cosy, perfect for a casual get-together, and they've got deals and surprises that add a fun twist to your meal.
Cons
  • There can be long queues to order, especially on busy days like bank holidays, which might put a dampener on things.
  • Sometimes menu items are out of stock, like certain meats or sides, leading to a bit of disappointment if you're set on something specific.
  • Drinks are a tad on the pricey side compared to your average local, so it might not be the best spot if you're just popping in for a pint.
  • Experiences can vary, with the odd visit feeling underwhelming, so it's worth checking ahead if you're after a flawless outing.

Me and my son once a month come here on for a little mother and son meal whilst my husband is at work and today was lovely! Staff were amazing, I ordered a chicken combo and missed adding a second part to my meal which the lovely waitress came and informed me and asked me what i would like to add on! Most places would have taken advantage of that!(unsure of name as I didn't get it and had finished her shift before we left but had vibrant red hair). My son made a few friends in the play area as well! Lastly, I believe it was the manager I approached and asked for my sons ice cream that comes with the kids meals. My son always wanted sprinkles on his ice cream but they don't come on the free ones usually. Today I asked if it was possible and was willing to pay for them to be added on and the manager advised they don't usually come with free ice creams but was wonderful and put them on anyway! It's these little things that make people's days and it definitely made my sons day which made mine! He was so happy he finally got his sprinkles haha! Food was quick and fresh and hot and tasted lovely as always! Staff really make this place worth our monthly visits together. Thanks all and we will see you next month!

My partner booked a table for my birthday meal, as it’s one of our favourite places to relax and the staff always make you feel welcome. Ray went above and beyond to make my birthday meal extra special with candles on the table, and in a quiet corner so we could enjoy our romantic evening for two. My partner had arranged a birthday cake, and Ray came out singing happy birthday. So thank you to Ray and the the rest of the staff for making my Birthday extra special

Nice place to go for a carvery/meal. The carvery is really nice. It's also an ice cream parlour and their cakes are delicious. The menu is quite varied and there's something to suit everyone. The drinks are maybe a bit dearer than a normal pub but in line with other similar places. Their house sodas are lovely and refreshing on a warm day especially the morello cherry flavour. Staff are friendly and helpful and are always clearing the tables unlike some other places. Well worth a visit.

Do not waste your money!! We went Bank Holiday Monday for a 2pm booking. We were in a queue to order for 15 minutes, staff behind the bar were friendly and helpful. We ordered 3 standard carvery meals at £12.99 per head. They did not have gammon or roast potatoes, when this was commented on the staff behind the food started banging dishes around, the wait for roast potatoes was 30 minutes. We opted for a sweet, they were all out of crumble,no sponge pudding, and none of their infamous cakes.

We came out for tea with the kids and was served at the bar by Ian. Lovely friendly bloke. The food was great. We ordered cake away for afters and wow the portion sizes were more than generous. Ian told us to sit back at our table and he would bring the cake out to us which he did along with bags to take it away. Can't fault the service it was amazing from start to finish.
