About This Pub

Ah, Smawthorne Lane Working Mens Club – it's one of those unassuming places that might not catch your eye from the outside, but step inside and you're in for a treat. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff are absolute gems, always ready with a smile and making sure everyone feels welcome, whether you're popping in for a quick drink or booking the hall for a family bash. The atmosphere really shines, especially on a Saturday night, with a solid selection of beers and spirits that won't break the bank – it's just the sort of spot for a relaxed catch-up with mates. Plus, it's surprisingly spacious and clean inside, which makes it ideal for events; I've heard it's been a hit for kids' parties, though do keep in mind the drinks for the youngsters are a bit thin on the ground. On the flip side, the building's exterior could do with a freshen-up, and that dirty floor has cropped up as a niggle, so you might want to watch your step. Overall, with a solid 4.4 rating, it's got that community feel that's hard to beat, but it's worth checking if it's open before you head over, as details are a bit sparse. If you're in Castleford and after a no-fuss venue, I'd say give it a go – it's got more charm than it lets on!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's a spacious venue with plenty of room, perfect for hosting events like birthday parties or get-togethers.
  • The atmosphere is lively and enjoyable, especially on a Saturday night, with a good selection of beers, lagers, and spirits at really competitive prices.
  • Inside, it's surprisingly clean and well-kept, which is a nice surprise after seeing the outside.
Cons
  • The outside of the building looks a bit run down, which might put you off at first glance.
  • The floor can be quite dirty in places, as one person mentioned it really showed up.
  • Options for kids' drinks are pretty limited, so it might not be the best choice if you're bringing the little ones.
  • There aren't any specific operating hours listed, and it seems like the place might not be as active these days, which could mean it's not always open when you fancy a visit.

Booked the hall for grand daughters birthday, plenty of room with lots of space, clean & friendly staff. Very restricted in kids drinks, otherwise good.

We element to my nieces birthday party here. The team were lovely and whilst the outside of the building looked a little run down, I was pleasantly surprised going in. The toilets and entrance areas were clean and welcoming. My only criticism would be that the floor was very dirty and it showed on the kids feet, otherwise thrilled with the room and it really was fantastic value. Thank you
