About This Pub
Ah, Back-Inn Time, what a lovely spot it is in Chelmsford! From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this place really nails the American diner experience with its mouth-watering menu full of classics like burgers, steaks, and those irresistible desserts that have folks raving. The atmosphere is just brilliant – imagine walking into a lively Western scene that's perfect for a laugh with your lot or a family gathering, and the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, which is always a treat. It's got that consistent quality that's kept people coming back for years, with plenty of positive vibes from recent visits. On the flip side, though, the hours can be a bit restrictive, only open five days a week and kicking off later in the day, so it might not be ideal if you're after something more flexible. Plus, those whopping portions are fabulous if you're up for it, but they could be a challenge for lighter eaters, and the themed setup might not click with everyone who prefers a more straightforward pub feel. All in all, it's a solid choice for a memorable meal, and I'd say it's worth popping in if you're in the area – just plan ahead and you'll have a whale of a time!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot-on, with a brilliant array of American classics like juicy burgers, steaks, and desserts that leave you wanting more – it's all about those good times with great flavours.
-
The atmosphere is so lively and fun, like stepping into a quirky Western diner; it's perfect for catching up with mates or treating the family to a meal.
-
Service is top-notch – the staff are welcoming, chatty, and really accommodating, making everyone feel right at home.
-
It's got a solid reputation with consistently high ratings, meaning you can rely on a cracking experience every visit.
Cons
-
Opening hours are a bit limited, only five days a week and often starting late in the afternoon, which might not suit if you're after a spot for lunch or a spontaneous midweek pint.
-
Portions are generous – brilliant if you're starving, but they might overwhelm if you're not in the mood for a massive plateful, though they do offer doggy bags.
-
The American diner theme is a hoot, but it could feel a tad gimmicky for those who prefer something more traditional or understated.

This remains the best place in Chelmsford to go for a birthday meal, or just a bite and a drink.
A firm favourite of ours for well over 20 years, the food is fabulous and the staff are fantastic.
Update (2025): still flipping awesome!
Really quirky place, like walking into a western! Staff are lovely, welcoming and accommodating for our picky, very hungry group. Jane and her fellow servers were happy to have a chat and tend to all our needs quickly. The food was delicious! Could not fault the food at all
The food is always amazing at Back Inn Time. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, and the service is awesome, the team always makes us feel like part of the family.
One of the things we love is their specials board; there’s always something new on there, which keeps the menu fresh and exciting. Plus, if you’re celebrating a birthday, they’ll sing a lively song that really makes the day feel special. If you haven’t tried Back Inn Time yet, you’re missing out!
Back Inn Time has been our go-to spot for years, and it never disappoints! The service, food, and atmosphere are truly unbeatable. We’ve never had a bad meal, and each visit feels like a treat. The staff here is outstanding, with the waiters and waitresses always making us feel welcome. A special shoutout to Kerry and Jane, who go above and beyond, making sure every detail is perfect—they’re attentive, friendly, and make you feel at home.
We happily travel quite a distance to dine here regularly, and it’s well worth it every time. For anyone considering a visit, don't hesitate—you’ll leave satisfied and looking forward to your next meal!
