About This Pub

Ah, Voodoo Keller Bar, what a delightful find in the heart of Chelmsford! From what I've gathered chatting about it with mates, it's got this wonderful mix of a welcoming, intimate setting with those original prison vibes that make it stand out from the usual high street haunts. The drinks are where it really shines – think top-notch local brews, creative cocktails, and a solid wine list that caters to all tastes, paired with some tasty nibbles like pretzels and nachos to keep things going. Events like quizzes and live music add a real spark, drawing in a friendly crowd and making it easy to while away an evening. On the flip side, it does get lively and a bit loud at times, which is brilliant if you're up for it but might not be ideal for a more subdued catch-up. Plus, with its limited days open and basement location, it's worth checking the schedule and directions beforehand to avoid any disappointment. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone looking for a bit of character and good company in Chelmsford – I'd say give it a go if you're in the mood for something a tad special.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The drink selection is absolutely brilliant, with an extensive range of Chelmsford Brew Co. beers, tasty cocktails, and even guest taps for something a bit different – perfect for a proper pint or a fancy mixer.
  • It's got a really cosy and unique vibe, tucked away in a basement with original features from the old Chelmsford Prison, making it feel like a hidden gem that's just inviting for a relaxed evening.
  • They host some cracking events like quizzes, live music, and DJ nights, which add a fun buzz and give you plenty of reasons to pop in regularly.
  • The staff are genuinely welcoming and helpful, always ready with recommendations or to sort out a booking, which makes the whole experience feel warm and personal.
Cons
  • It can get a tad noisy during busier evenings or events, which might not suit everyone if you're after a quiet chat over drinks.
  • The opening hours are a bit limited, only running on a few days a week, so you'll need to plan ahead if you're keen to visit.
  • Being in a basement location, it might be a smidge tricky to find if you're not familiar with the area, and the stairs could be a hassle for some.

Love this bar, great drink selection and atmosphere with a good selection of events and music at the weekend. Cosy atmosphere, love the vinyl nights did get very loud towards the end of the night but individual preference I guess! I always recommend to anyone wanting somewhere more upmarket to go in Chelmsford.

Had a really good Mai Tai here. Tasted like an authentic recipe, would recommend it, and I will be coming back.

It’s the vibe of the city always with a warm welcome, awesome drinks and some unique events! Situated in the old Chelmsford Prison many of the original features are still in place, including the iron cell door, Voodoo Keller Bar is the bar of the Chelmsford Brew Co serving up their epic brews and guest taps alongside an unrivalled cocktail menu. The weekly cocktail specials are definitely social and often something you won’t find anywhere else. If that or the main cocktail menu aren’t enough you can often make requests, there’s really nothing Ben the Mixologist can’t make (I’ve tried to challenge him!) The theme nights and live music add an extra element of awesomeness to Voodoo Keller especially some of the foodie partnerships with the likes of Parlour Homecooking. There’s an absolute vibe and one sure to be experienced!
