About This Pub
Ah, the Ape and Apple – what a lovely little find in the midst of Manchester's hustle. I have to say, it's one of those pubs that just makes you feel right at home from the moment you step in, with its bright, spacious layout and those large doors opening onto the street, letting in plenty of natural light. The rooftop terrace is an absolute treat on a nice day, and inside, the classic wood-panelled bar and stylish tiling give it that timeless pub charm without feeling stuffy. They've nailed the drinks side of things, offering a solid range of real ales, lagers, and wines that pair brilliantly with their diverse food menu – whether you're in the mood for a proper hearty meal or something lighter and vegan-friendly. And let's not forget the entertainment; it's got Manchester's longest-running free comedy night every Wednesday, plus live music and sports screenings that really get the place buzzing. On the downside, it does tend to fill up quickly during peak times, so you might find yourself jostling for space or waiting a bit for service, and while the beer has come on leaps and bounds, it's not everyone's cup of tea if you're after something more adventurous. All in all, it's a top-notch spot for a casual catch-up or a fun evening, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for good value and a warm welcome in the city centre.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is spot on – it's vibrant, welcoming, and full of character with wood-panelled bars and a lovely rooftop terrace that's perfect for soaking up the sun.
-
They've got a cracking selection of beers, especially the Joseph Holt ones, and the food menu caters to all tastes with hearty classics, fresh salads, sharing platters, and even vegan options.
-
It's a brilliant spot for live events like Manchester's longest-running free comedy night on Wednesdays or regular music gigs, adding a real buzz to your visit.
-
Ideal for sports fans with well-placed screens showing Sky Sports and TNT, so you won't miss a moment of the big games.
-
Right in the heart of Manchester, just off Deansgate, making it super convenient for a quick pint, a meal, or a night out, and it's wonderfully dog-friendly too.
Cons
-
It can get quite busy, especially during events or match days, which might mean a wait for a table or a drink if you're not there early.
-
The beer selection, while generally well-received, has had a mixed history with some folks not being keen on certain options in the past, though it seems to have improved.
-
With varying closing times listed, it might not always stay open as late as you'd hope, so it's worth checking ahead for a late-night session.

Spot on pub love it . Great staff and beer I will be back
Really lovely pub with great service, great beer, great food and to top it all, it's DOG FRIENDLY!!! Fabulous!! We'll be regulars from now on! Thank you for being such lovely people 🥰
Great food at a reasonable price. Friendly staff, lovely decor. Very central just off Deansgate.
Always been a decent pub in the town centre but only recently called in after a good amount of time lockdown etc. Looks like they have a good few things going on throughout the month and the pub was quite busy when I visited. I have to say I was not a fan of Holts lager years ago but it's come on leaps and bounds and its now a good decent pint. Standards look high on keeping the pub clean and the bar staff were friendly overall would definitely recommend a visit.
