About This Pub

Ah, the Anchor in Cheshunt – it's one of those pubs that's been around since 1892, part of that classic McMullen family, and it really does have that warm, cosy feel that draws you in for a pint or two. I love how friendly the staff are; they're always up for a chat and make you feel like you're catching up with mates rather than just popping in for a drink. The drinks menu is spot on, with plenty of real ales and options for cocktails if you're in the mood for something a bit fancier, and it's brilliant for watching live sports or having a game of darts or pool. Plus, being dog-friendly and having an outside area means it's versatile for different get-togethers. On the flip side, though, some people have had a rough time with prices feeling a bit steep or drinks not living up to expectations, and there've been stories about private events getting gatecrashed or odd characters hanging about, which can spoil the atmosphere. The decor's a bit dated too, and that whiff of disinfectant might make you raise an eyebrow. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're in the area and fancy a traditional pub experience, but I'd say go in with your eyes open – it's got heaps of potential, and with a few tweaks, it could be even better. Worth checking out for a relaxed evening, especially if you're into that old-school pub charm.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, always ready with a smile and top-notch service that makes you feel right at home.
  • It's got a fantastic selection of drinks, from locally brewed real ales to cocktails and world lagers, perfect for a proper pub session.
  • Loads of entertainment on offer, like live Sky and TNT Sports, darts, and a pool table, which keeps things lively and fun for groups.
  • Dog-friendly and wheelchair accessible, plus there's a garden or outside area for when the weather's nice – great for a relaxed catch-up.
  • They've got space for private events, which is handy for birthdays or meetings, and it's all set up to handle groups without a fuss.
Cons
  • Some folks have mentioned the drinks being overpriced or not up to scratch, like feeling they're more juice than booze, which can be a bit disappointing.
  • There have been issues with private hires getting interrupted by random visitors, and even some creepy behaviour around the place, which puts a damper on things.
  • The decor feels a tad outdated, almost stuck in the dark ages, and that strong disinfectant smell might leave you wondering what's going on behind the scenes.
  • A few reviews suggest it's trying to change the vibe in a way that might push out the old locals, making it feel less welcoming for everyone.
  • While the beer can be affordable, the overall experience sometimes falls short compared to nearby spots, like they could do with better management to sort out the niggles.

Charge horrendous prices for drinks with little to no alcohol genuine scam just straight juice. had private part rented and random people were alowed to constantly come through. when asking creep on the street who was peeking through the windows at girls to leave because it was private rented we were kicked out because the creep started a fight. owner and staff were physically abusive started putting hands on some of the girls just for trying to explain the situation. Was impossible to get a hold of staff for a drink, bar was constantly empty. staff were constantly screaming at everyone for an issue that a random person started outside the pub. supposedly recently refurbished but tables were all sticky, dust all the way around and we did not even have access to the pool table that they put away. overall venue and staff are horrendous and alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks not worth the price at all.

They are trying to gentrify Cheshunt, just like Hackney. Changed the name from "old" anchor to The Anchor. Pretty soon they will add a garden. It will be noisy with young people and drive the old locals out. Sell outs.

Very 50s pub. Brill service staff nothing to much. Went with colleagues from work had a lovely time. Menu snacky food. Good if you do not want a full dinner. Wine Approx £30 per bottle menu rib eye prawns on skewers double fried chips. Steak pie nachos with cheese.

Low cost beer. The only saving grace... No food to speak of. A decor from the dark ages. Way too much odor of disinfectant (and you are left wondering WHY). Half a mile up the road is The Bulls Head which is orders of magnitude better in every way. This place needs new Management; and one with a vision. They have decent space and easy access but no one seems to care that it's rightly a cheerless experience. Local competition south of The Anchor is very poor, perhaps that's why no one bothers to upgrade this place, but my advice is to give this place a miss and walk or drive the extra half mile north to The Bulls Head. Sorry Anchor Pub, you are a poor excuse for a Millennial's social hot-spot.
