About This Pub

Ah, the Alma Tavern – it's one of those classic English pubs that you stumble upon and think, 'This could be a gem.' Tucked away on Droitwich Road, just a stone's throw from Gheluvelt Park and the canal, it's got that homely feel with a child-friendly garden that's an absolute sun-trap for outdoor drinks and meals. I love how they've kept things affordable, so you can pop in for a bite without breaking the bank, and their range of craft beers is spot on if you're in the mood for something a bit special. It's also brilliant for family dos or even a casual event, with facilities for kids and dogs, making it feel inclusive and community-oriented. On the flip side, though, it's not all roses; some mates have mentioned the food letting them down, like fish and chips that were more soggy than crispy or portions that didn't quite live up to expectations. Service can be hit or miss too – one minute you're getting friendly chats and quick orders, the next you're dealing with someone who's a tad unaccommodating. And don't forget that parking rigmarole with the CCTV; it's a small thing, but it adds an extra layer of annoyance. Overall, if you're in Worcester and fancy a relaxed spot for a meal or a chinwag, it's worth giving the Alma a go, but maybe keep your expectations in check and go on a day when things are buzzing positively. It's got that potential to be a top haunt, just needs a bit of fine-tuning here and there.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a cracking family-friendly spot with a secluded garden that's perfect for al fresco dining, especially on a sunny day – ideal for kids and even dogs to join in.
  • They've got a wide range of craft beers and continental lagers on offer, which is always a treat if you're after something a bit different from the usual pints.
  • The pub feels like a real community hub, with affordable prices making it accessible for a casual meal or a get-together, and they've got separate areas for quieter dining.
  • From what I've seen, the staff can be spot on when they're on form, with quick service and tasty meals that hit the spot for a relaxed outing.
Cons
  • Some folks have had dodgy experiences with the food, like soggy batter on fish and chips or dishes that weren't quite cooked through, which can put a dampener on things.
  • Service isn't always up to scratch – a few reviews mention unhelpful staff, which might leave you feeling a bit overlooked on a busy night.
  • There's that hassle with parking; you've got to register your vehicle to avoid charges, which is a bit of a faff when you're just popping in for a quick drink.
  • Recent vibes aren't as upbeat, with a lower average rating lately suggesting it might not be at its best right now, so you could end up with mixed results.

We dined here for Fathers Day 2025, the service was great with very friendly staff, and the food was exceptional. The food came quickly, and we also had deserts which were very good. Recommended place to go for chill and dining. .

This used to be my local, but haven't used it for a while since it's been under new management. It wouldn't be fair of me to comment on food or service since I haven't eaten there: I went in for a pint on the way home. By around 8pm the kitchen was closed so I asked for a pint of mild (they had a stout) and some pork scratchings (expecting a bag). Turns out the scratchings are 'free range' as I watched the bar tender shovel them out of a heated tray and deposit them in a small plastic bowl. For beer and bowl I was charged £8.55. The beer was ok but the free range scratchings weren't. Overpriced nonsense. This used to be a lively and interesting little pub but now lacks atmosphere and I note that recent reviews are a little lack lustre.

I have been to this place many times before with my friends and have always felt very welcome and well looked after. I visited this place again after a few months, and I can say that the service (especially the blonde hair lady) was extremely disappointing and unaccommodating. The lady behind the bar was very attentive and kind but the other server was curt and disrespectful. She informed us that the table we were sat at was going to be used for the karaoke but the manner in which she spoke was unnecessarily rude and she wasn’t helpful at finding us alternative seating arrangements. Even though the place is very nice, this server completely put me off from visiting again.

Just had lunch at The AlmaTavern with five friends, 2 of ordered fish & chips, not impressed! It looked good but the batter was soggy & oil soaked, the fish not fully cooked. Inedible for both of us, my friend had chilli, the bowl in which it was served was chipped all around the rim, it’s was a disgrace only fit for the bin. The only satisfactory meal was the Ham Egg & chips, can’t really go wrong with that. After we had all finished, we complained & was asked it we wanted another fish, bit late then! We did think they might knock a bit off the bill but no, full price. I don’t know what’s happening there as we had a nice meal not so long ago. Change of Chef? Won’t be returning. Six customers lost. Must say the waitress was very pleasant

4 for lunch on Tuesday, we chose the Tuesday Chip Shop menu (2 for £18). Food was about 20 minutes, no problem with that. I had cod and chips, the portion was ok, but the fish was wet inside the batter, maybe needing a little extra cooking time, it just slid out of the batter and separated. It's a busy place, so obviously popular, I guess I was unlucky.
