About This Pub

Ah, Evil Eye – it's one of those places in York that just draws you in with its bizarre and wonderful charm, tucked away on an ancient street that feels like a step back in time. I have to say, the cocktails are spot on; they're crafted with fresh ingredients by a team who's clearly passionate about what they do, and there's such a wide range that you're bound to find something that hits the spot, whether it's a classic or one of their inventive creations. The vibe is relaxed and full of character, with comfy nooks and a courtyard that makes for a great escape, especially if you're up for joining in on their weekly events like karaoke or quizzes – they really know how to keep things lively without it feeling overwhelming. On the downside, it's not the cheapest spot around; those drink prices can sting a bit, and the booking rules might put a damper on impromptu visits, particularly if you're not in a big group or heading out on a Friday or Saturday. Still, if you're after a memorable evening with good company and a dash of the unusual, I'd give it a go – it's got that warm, inviting feel that makes you want to come back for more.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The cocktails are absolutely delicious, made with fresh ingredients and a huge variety to suit every taste – it's a real treat for cocktail lovers.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready with recommendations to make your visit memorable.
  • The atmosphere is quirky and charming, set in an old building with original features, comfy seating, and a lovely courtyard that adds to the laid-back vibe.
  • They've got a great lineup of events like karaoke on Tuesdays, quizzes with cash prizes, and open mic nights, which make it a fun spot for a night out.
  • There are some cracking deals on drinks during certain hours, like two for one offers, which can make it more affordable for a cheeky evening.
Cons
  • Drinks can be a bit on the pricey side, with cocktails around £9 to £10 each, which might add up if you're out for a longer session.
  • Booking policies are quite strict – no spots after 19:45 on Fridays or at all on Saturdays, and it's only for groups of six or more, so it doesn't suit smaller or spontaneous plans.
  • The old building has steep stairs and some unusual seating like beds upstairs, which could be tricky for those who aren't keen on navigating them.
  • It can get busy at times, especially during events, so you might end up waiting for a table or dealing with a lively crowd.

Always have a good time when coming here. Decoration and furnishing is stunning with nice seating. Vast selection of cocktails with anything you can think of! Last time I went the bar tender was so nice and helpful when deciding drinks - I didn’t catch his name but he had brown hair with glasses. Evil eye will always be my go to for cocktails and drinks!

Popped into Evil Eye to try one of their cocktails — prices are around £10 each, which is pretty standard. The atmosphere inside is really cool and laid-back, and the bar opens out into a charming little courtyard, which adds to the vibe. One of the staff members was especially friendly and helpful, even giving me some great recommendations on places to check out in York. Top-notch customer service and a great spot for a drink if you’re in the ci

Quirky place to have a drink. Very old building with lots of original features and steep wooden stairs. Some seating upstairs is on beds! Great cocktails.

We visited on a Sunday evening, so it wasn't too busy. Took a look at the menu, there were lots of different drinks to choose from, such as gin and vodka to alcohol free. You'll notice it is quite expensive; cockatil and mocktails are £9 to £10, and most soft drinks are £3.50. Friends both had a gin, whereas I had a raspberry vodka cocktail that (strangely) contained yogurt! It was actually really nice! We sat upstairs, where it was fairly quiet.

We came for my birthday! Delicious cocktails - the Fleetwood CaraMac was very good! Staff were so friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. Loved the upstairs comfy seating too. Would recommend a visit!
