About This Pub

Ah, Ye Golden Lion, what a lovely spot it is! I've got to say, chatting about this place feels like sharing a pint with mates over a quiet corner table. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this pub really shines with its rich history dating back to the 16th century – that Tudor architecture gives it such a unique, timeless appeal that you don't see everywhere. The beers and ciders are a highlight; they've got a great range, including some rarer picks that make it stand out in the local scene, and they're served up at fair prices with solid quality. Then there's the food – blimey, it's a winner, with generous portions and options that cater to all tastes, whether you're tucking into a steak on Thursdays or going for the veggie choices that don't skimp on flavour. It's clear the team puts in the effort to make everyone feel welcome, especially since it's reopened with new owners who seem to have breathed fresh life into the place. On the flip side, though, the operating hours look a tad confusing from the details floating about, so you might want to double-check before popping in to avoid any disappointment. And with the website not playing ball, it's a bit of a faff to get all the info you need upfront. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed night out, but keeping those little niggles in mind will help you make the most of it – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, as the good bits definitely outweigh the minor downsides!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got a fantastic selection of beers and ciders, including some rare ones like Hawkstone that you don't often find around here.
  • The atmosphere is so welcoming and cosy, with that classic old-school pub vibe that makes you feel right at home.
  • The food is spot on – generous portions, reasonable prices, and even great options for veggies, like tasty plant burgers and pizzas.
  • As Wellingborough's oldest pub, it has this charming historical feel with Tudor architecture that really adds to the experience.
Cons
  • The operating hours seem a bit muddled based on what's available, which might make it tricky to plan a visit.
  • There wasn't much info on the website due to an error, so it could be hard to get the full scoop before heading over.

It's great to see Ye Golden Lion open again. The team do a great job to make everyone feel welcome. The beer is good quality and fairly priced as well.

Ye Golden Lion renowned for being Wellingborough’s oldest pub, dating back to the 16th century this pub has its own unique character, with typical Tudor architecture. The interior is nicely decorated with a welcoming atmosphere. The food at this venue, is enough reason to visit, with classic pub, comfort foods being served on their menu, the Sunday roast. Could perhaps be the best roast potatoes in town with full flavour, perfectly cooked, the full English Breakfast, again possibly the best in the town, this is a venue worth visiting and seeing for yourself just how great the food and service is.

Absolutely can’t knock the food at The Golden Lion. I’m not a meat eater but have to admit the steaks (steak night Thursday) look fantastic. The plant burger and veggie pizza are lovely - portions are great and the price extremely reasonable (you will find it hard to find this quality cheaper) Book your steak in advance. One of the most underrated places locally; if you can, go. Drinks are reasonably priced too.
