About This Pub

Ah, the White Lion – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Bolton, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this brilliant atmosphere that's perfect for a game of darts or just chatting over a pint, and the food, especially those jacket potatoes loaded with cheese and beans, sounds absolutely mouthwatering. The ale, particularly the Joseph Holts Bitter, gets rave reviews as the best in the area, and the bar staff really make it special with their warm, friendly service – plus, that jukebox is apparently the talk of the town. On the flip side, it's a bit of a rough-and-ready spot, more geared towards the regulars, so if you're after something more refined, it might not be your cup of tea. It can get heaving during footie times, meaning you might be on your feet, and without a website, it's not the easiest to plan a visit. All in all, if you're up for an honest, affordable night out with good company and cracking drinks, this place is worth a go – just go in with the right expectations for a true British pub experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is spot on, especially if you're into darts or just soaking up that lively, traditional pub vibe.
  • The food is a real winner – think delicious jacket spuds with cheese, beans, and crispy onions that hit the spot.
  • They serve up what sounds like the best pint of Joseph Holts Bitter in the area, perfect for ale enthusiasts.
  • The bar staff and landlady are fantastic, making you feel right at home with their friendly service.
  • It's got the best jukebox in Westhoughton, adding to the fun and keeping things entertaining.
Cons
  • It can feel a bit rough around the edges, more of a no-nonsense locals spot rather than somewhere polished.
  • Things get pretty packed during big events like football matches, so you might end up standing if you pop in then.
  • As a traditional Holts pub, it's not for those after something fancy or 'posh' – it's unashamedly straightforward.
  • With no website, it's a tad tricky to check out the latest details before heading over.

This is a bit of a locals pub. It is what it is. It's a Holt house, a little bit rough, but unashamed. If you want ponsy, go to the other end of the street. Drunk here for over 40 years off and on. Moved away, and it is still.my'm going to pub when I return home.

Good old school pub. As its a Holts pub there ale is decent to as well as the prices. Can get abit busy when the footies so if you go at this time expect to be standing.

Paid a fleeting visit yesterday when I noticed it was Holts. I wasn`t disappointed . A proper traditional pub, with seperate rooms serving very nice Bitter.
