Waggon & Horses, 17A Church St, Oldbury B69 3AD

About This Pub

Ah, the Waggon & Horses – it's one of those pubs that sticks in your mind, you know? Tucked away on Church Street in Oldbury, it's got this wonderful old-school vibe with its historic tiles and etched glass windows that make you pause and appreciate the craftsmanship. I reckon it's a great spot if you're after a good-value pint; they've got some of the cheapest options around, and the Enville beer is just spot on – proper refreshing and full of flavour. The staff can be lovely when they're on top form, making you feel welcome and part of the gang, which adds to that classic British pub atmosphere. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; there are times when service falls a bit flat, with a few folks mentioning they felt ignored in favour of the locals, and the place can get a tad squished, leaving you wishing for a bit more room to breathe. Still, if you're up for a no-fuss night out and don't mind the occasional quirk, it's worth popping in – just go with an open mind and you'll likely have a decent time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got that classic British pub charm with fascinating historic features like beautiful tiles and etched glass windows that really make you feel like you're stepping back in time.
  • The drinks are an absolute bargain – some of the cheapest pints you'll find, and they've got a decent selection of beers, including the cracking Enville ale that's always a winner.
  • When the staff are in good form, they're warm and welcoming, creating a friendly local vibe that makes for a pleasant visit, especially if you're up for a chat.
Cons
  • There have been a few grumbles about the staff not always being the friendliest, with some favouring the regulars and leaving newcomers feeling a bit overlooked.
  • The space can feel quite cramped and cosy, almost like you're in someone's kitchen, which might not suit everyone if you're after a more spacious spot to relax.
  • The atmosphere isn't always spot on; it can come across as a bit cliquey or even off-putting for outsiders, and there might be the odd political undertone from the owner that doesn't sit well with all visitors.

The Wagon and Horses in Oldbury is a hidden gem that pleasantly surprised me. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and inviting — a classic British pub with a friendly local vibe. The staff were welcoming and attentive without being overbearing, making sure we were well looked after throughout our visit. The food was excellent — hearty portions, well-cooked, and full of flavour. I had the [insert dish you had, e.g. “steak and ale pie”], and it was one of the best pub meals I’ve had in a long time. The menu has a good range of traditional pub favourites, and everything we ordered came out piping hot and freshly made. Drinks-wise, the bar is well-stocked with a good selection of beers, ales, and spirits. Prices were reasonable, and it’s clear they get a lot of regulars — which is always a good sign. There’s also a spacious outdoor area which would be perfect on a sunny day, and the pub seems to host regular events and live music, adding to its charm. All in all, The Wagon and Horses is a great spot whether you’re after a relaxed meal, a casual pint, or just a comfortable place to unwind. Highly recommended if you’re in the Oldbury area.

Unfriendly Miserable staff who serves the locals before you even though you been waiting before them. Local Punters looking at you like your from a different planet. Small room like your in someone's kitchen no where to sit. Forget the beer price I rather pay more and get better customer service, friendly atmosphere and nice place to sit like the white swan nearby.

Tory supporting owner demands a general election. I wonder how many of his customers enjoyed a wonderful time in the past 14 years. How come the patriots of this country don't understand how our democracy works?

This pub has actually been in the national news for serving the cheapest pints in Britain, and it is very well priced. The beer selection is also decent, and service is good. Atmosphere isn't the best, but is probably to be expected from a bargain boozer.
