About This Pub
Ah, the Waggon & Horses – it's one of those pubs that feels like a reliable old mate, you know? Tucked away in Handforth near Wilmslow, it's got that classic Greene King charm with a carvery that's often spot on for a hearty, budget-friendly feed. I love how the staff go out of their way to make you feel at home; they're always cheerful and on hand to sort you out, which really lifts the whole experience. Plus, with the soft play for the kids and screens showing live sports, it's brilliant for family outings or catching the game with mates. On the flip side, the place does look a tad worn around the edges – that building could use a freshen-up to make it more inviting. And while the food's generally tasty and generous, it's pretty basic stuff, and I've heard a few tales of it not always hitting the mark, like overcooked dishes that leave you wanting more. All in all, it's a solid spot for a casual get-together, especially if you're after good value and a relaxed atmosphere, but it might not wow you if you're seeking something a bit more polished. I'd say give it a go, especially if you're nearby, and book ahead to avoid any hassles – you'll likely have a grand time!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The carvery here is a real winner – it's tasty, generous, and incredibly affordable, making it a great choice for a satisfying meal without breaking the bank.
-
The staff are genuinely friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and quick to help, which really adds to the welcoming atmosphere.
-
It's super family-friendly with a soft play area for the little ones, plus plenty of space to relax, making it ideal for a day out with kids.
-
They've got live sports on the screens, including big events like the Women's Euros, so it's a fantastic spot to catch the action with a pint in hand.
-
The location is spot on, just a short drive from Manchester Airport and local attractions, perfect for a quick stop or a meet-up with friends.
Cons
-
The building feels a bit dated and tired, both inside and out, which might not give the best first impression when you arrive.
-
The food is straightforward pub fare – nothing fancy, and it's hit or miss; some dishes can be overcooked or not quite up to scratch.
-
It can get busy, so if you don't book ahead, you might end up waiting or missing out on a table, especially for the carvery.
-
While it's generally clean and tidy, a few folks have mentioned inconsistencies in food quality, which could disappoint if you're after something reliable every time.

We visited in a family group. The carvery food was basic and straightforward food. It isn't gourmet food but it was tasty, very affordable and generous. The staff were attentive and helpful. Booking is recommended as it is a popular place to eat. I would definitely go again thanks to the affordability factor!

Visited on Tuesday 3 June. Travelled from N Wales to meet friends. First impressions not brilliant - the building is tired, inside and out. It was very quiet as we'd met at 11:30. Food was ok, just typical pub chain grub - nothing special. We avoided the carvery as everything was already sitting under the heat lamps, as we entered.
We didn't want dessert but would have enjoyed hot drinks. For medical reasons, we all drink decaffeinated coffee/tea but the pub could not provide any decaf drinks.
Upon paying the bill, we asked to split it in two and the young woman didn't know how to do it. She asked for help from a colleague and when my friend paid his half, my wife asked "Can we have receipts please?". She nearly got her head bitten off. "YOU'VE ASKED TO PAY SEPARATELY, YOU'LL GET RECIEPTS WHEN YOU'VE BOTH PAID " We didn't leave a tip.
A warm welcome from staff when arrived was then complimented by the aroma of the beautiful looking carvery. That was it myself and my family's mind were made up without even a glance at the menus, carvery all round. We ordered at the bar served by a cheerful fellow named Ian. Over the carvery where we were served by a friendly giant of a man, Alex if memory serves me correctly. The food was as expected, excellent We couldn't fault the experience from beginning to end. Even checked on whilst we ate by a pleasant young lady Kerry. Thank you waggon and horses staff for .making our experience a joyous occasion.
So disappointed, been coming here since I was a child. The food quality the past couple of times, has not been the best. Still gave it a couple of more tries, as it had been busy on these occasions but today was the worst I’ve ever had from there. The butter chicken was so over cooked i had to strip the coating off to eat it and the chips tasted like they had been cooked more than once. Definitely won’t be coming back.
Visited today as the kids wanted to go to a soft play and have a meal before hand. We had carverys which was probably one of the best iv ever had, everything was delicious, kids meals were well portioned and arrived quickly. Staff were helpful and friendly. Place was clean and tidy and well set out. Will definitely be visiting again. Well done team.
