About This Pub
Ah, the Pointing Dog – it's one of those pubs that really hits the mark for a laid-back afternoon or evening with friends. I've got to say, the beer garden is just lovely, especially on a sunny day; it's spacious and makes for a great spot to unwind with a refreshing pint or a hearty meal. The food menu is full of fresh, seasonal treats, from their spring and summer specials to those unbeatable Sunday roasts that keep everyone coming back. The staff are generally warm and efficient, adding to that homely vibe, and it's ace that they welcome dogs in certain areas, making it perfect after a countryside ramble. On the flip side, though, drinks do tend to be a bit steeper than at some other places, so if you're watching the pennies, it might not be your first choice for a big night. Plus, every now and then, you might run into a service hiccup, like a meal not quite hitting the spot or a staff member being a tad abrupt. Overall, it's a solid spot with more highs than lows, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area – just keep those little niggles in mind for a balanced experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer garden is an absolute gem, perfect for soaking up the sun with a pint and some mates after a long walk.
-
Food's spot on with fresh, seasonal dishes like pan-fried seabass or that legendary homemade pie – plenty of options to suit everyone.
-
Friendly and efficient service that makes you feel right at home, with staff who go the extra mile to accommodate.
-
It's dog-friendly in certain areas, which is brilliant if you're out for a stroll and fancy a stop-off.
-
Sunday roasts are a winner, with bottomless Yorkshire puds and lashings of gravy – highly recommended for a proper family get-together.
Cons
-
Drinks can be a tad on the pricey side compared to other local spots, so it might not be the best for a budget night out.
-
Occasionally, service hits a snag, like in one instance where a waiter was a bit short when sorting out a meal mix-up.
-
Some meals might not live up to the hype every time, as one review mentioned a Sunday lunch that was good but not particularly special.

A lovely pub with excellent parking, great food options and a spacious outdoor garden in the sun for both drinking and dining. Drinks generally on the pricier side compared to other places but have also eaten here too. Our food was delicious with lots of great options and as you can see, portion sizes were excellent. Service was brilliant and lovely atmosphere. Worth a visit!
Sunday lunch was good, but not special. Two guests ordered the roast turkey, which should have included pigs in blankets, but they weren't on the plate. When this was pointed out to the waitress she eventually brought two (which was correct) but then rudely snapped "if you want any more you'll have to pay." (We didn't expect any more). Table service was poor, we'd had two rounds of drinks for the five of us and at the end of the meal all of the empty glasses were still on the table! Staff need training big time.
Beautiful garden, nice food and drinks ,lovely staff, perfect place to spend time with family and friends. Recommend to everyone.
Definitely going again.
Excellent value for money. Friendly efficient service. The food was piping hot and very tasty.
Will definitely be back
Amazing experience! The service from start to finish was brilliant, friendly, funny staff who were so accommodating. Food was absolutely amazing for a good price. The building itself was equally as nice, overall every single aspect of our visit was great. Highly recommend for a Sunday roast
