About This Pub

Ah, the Three Moorhens – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Hitchin, with its mix of old-school charm and modern touches right near Priory Park. I've got to say, the food really shines; think hearty specials like beef and ale croquettes or halloumi fajita burgers that pair brilliantly with a pint. The staff are an absolute delight, especially folks like Brandon who bring that extra warmth and efficiency, making you feel right at home whether you're with a big group or just popping in for a quick bite. It's super family and dog-friendly too, which is brilliant if you're out with the kids or your four-legged mate. On the flip side, though, there have been a few tales of minor annoyances, like having to sort out a grubby table yourself or dealing with a drink that wasn't up to scratch, and the grub, while good, doesn't quite reach gourmet levels – some bits could do with a bit more polish. All in all, it's a solid spot for watching the footie, enjoying summer specials, or just unwinding, but I'd suggest keeping expectations realistic for the odd off day. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit for that cosy pub vibe, as long as you're up for a bit of give and take.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is consistently tasty and hits the spot, with options like gourmet burgers and specials that make for a proper pub meal.
  • Service is top-notch, especially from friendly staff like Brandon who go the extra mile to make you feel welcome and looked after.
  • It's a charming spot with a lovely atmosphere, perfect for relaxing in the beer garden or enjoying the historic vibes inside.
  • Dog-friendly and family-friendly features make it a great choice for bringing along the whole gang, including furry friends.
  • Plenty of facilities like WiFi, a car park, and outdoor play areas add to the convenience for a casual day out.
Cons
  • There can be occasional slip-ups with service, like finding a dirty table or a drink that's not quite right, which might put a dampener on things.
  • The food is solid pub grub but nothing extraordinary – some might wish for better touches, such as improved roast potatoes.
  • It seems experiences can vary; while most visits are brilliant, there have been disappointing moments that leave you hoping for more consistency.

Three Moorhens was great! Delicious food, lovely atmosphere, and the bartenders & waitstaff were wonderful. Our server, Brandon, was especially fabulous! He was so kind and quick, and he took excellent care of our very large group with enthusiasm, expertise, and a warm, welcoming smile. Thank you!

Oh my God what a disappointment . We have been here on or off for years & never disappointed but this time me & my wife & my mum & father in law. We were shown to the table which we had to clean our self's, then my mother in law had to return her drink as it still had lipstick on it & the food wasn't very good either. Such a shame we used to love this pub.

Squeezed a party of 16 adults + 5 kids on the day. Really friendly and relaxed - let us do our own thing. Lovely guy serving us - thanks for making it so easy. Food is on par with most other pub-grub places. Nothing to write home about but did the job for us - it was more important we had the right space and atmosphere, so thank you for that!

Incredible service from Branden. What a superstar! Extremely personable, patient, helpful, really felt he cared & seemed to exude love for his job. So great to experience this level of service. Food nice / not quite gourmet & would like to see improved roast potatoes, but overall as expected. Yorkshire puds & gravy good. The mini puds & hot drink a good deal. When speaking to the Manager to share our feedback on Branden - she too was excellent. Sorry - didn’t get her name.

We have been here a few times so far and the food was always good and staff very nice. The place is dog friendly and the floors under the tables are very clean what is great for our dog allergic to gluten. We will come again.
