About This Pub
Ah, The White Lion – it's one of those hidden gems in Norwich that I've heard so many good things about from folks who've popped in. From what the reviews say, it's got an absolutely stellar lineup of real ales, ciders, and even some interesting rums, which is perfect if you're after something a bit special beyond the usual lagers. The staff sound like they're dead friendly, always making sure everyone feels right at ease, and the Sunday roasts are apparently a real treat – proper homely grub that'll leave you satisfied. On the flip side, it's not smack in the middle of town, so you might fancy a nice riverside stroll to get there, but that could be a downside if you're not in the mood for walking. It does get packed, mind you, so planning ahead is a smart move if you're eyeing up a table. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed catch-up with mates, blending that old-school pub charm with a few modern touches, though it's not without its little quirks like the variable hours. I'd say give it a go if you're in the area – you won't be disappointed!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
Fantastic selection of real ales, ciders, and rums that really hits the spot for anyone who loves a proper pint.
-
The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming – it's one of those places where you instantly feel at home.
-
Top-notch food, especially the Sunday roasts, which are spot on and worth planning around.
-
It's got that charming traditional vibe with beams and tiled floors, making it a proper cosy spot in Norwich.
Cons
-
It's a bit of a trek from the city centre, though the riverside walk there is rather pleasant if you're up for it.
-
It can get quite busy, so you might need to book ahead if you're after a meal rather than just a quick drink.
-
The opening hours seem a touch unpredictable from what I've seen, which could catch you out on a spontaneous visit.

A great pub. I've been here many times in the past, less so since Covid times. Always made to feel welcome.
Cracking little real ale and cider pub. Not a drop of bloody inch's in sight, and more the better for it. 12 odd ciders from the barrel and about the same number of beers. 15 mins walk from the city centre but come up the riverside and it's much nicer. A must visit pub in Norwich with a great and knowledgeable landlord &team.
Always a good selection or real ales, in rotation. Also specialises in ciders and Perry. Has an interesting selection of rums too. Has three, interconnected bar areas. Pamment tile floor, beams, higgldy piggledy, the only surviving pub on Oak street, of an estimated 37 in days of yore. Friendly welcome from staff and other customers, exactly what a real old pub was and should be like. On Thursdays local Folk folk gather for a jam session in the side bar, that alone is worth a visit.
Excellent food, drink and atmosphere. Bar billiards as well, always a good experience :)
Last minute decisions are sometimes the best ones 😊
Outstanding Sunday roasts at the White Lion. Washed down with a very well kept beer🍺 (for me) and a cheeky red wine 🍷 (for Mrs B).
Highly recommended, and book if you plan on going as it is understandably popular and busy 🍽
