About This Pub
Ah, The Wheatsheaf Inn – it's one of those pubs that really knows how to make you feel welcome in Chester, with staff who go out of their way to be chatty and helpful, just like popping round to a mate's for a catch-up. The food's a highlight too; we've got reviews raving about the mixed grills and surf and turf, all at prices that won't leave you rummaging for change, and they've nailed the family-friendly bit with options for veggies and even a takeaway service for those lazy evenings in. It's clear they're invested in the community, lending a hand with charities and spaces for local events, which gives it that genuine local feel. On the flip side, though, things can get a bit frustrating with the bar queues turning into a bit of a scrum, especially since they switched from waiter service, and the smoking near the doors is a proper downer that might put a dampener on your visit. Overall, with a solid 4.2 rating from the crowd, it's a place I'd recommend for a good night out, but maybe plan around the busier times to keep things smooth sailing.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely and always up for a chat, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
The food is spot on for the price – think hearty classics like mixed grills and mac and cheese that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank.
-
It's a proper community hub, supporting local charities and offering their function area for free, which is brilliant for get-togethers.
-
The atmosphere is just right for a relaxed meal with friends or family, and they've got options for everyone, including vegan and vegetarian choices.
-
With a takeaway service now, you can enjoy their tasty dishes from the comfort of your own home, which is a real bonus for busy days.
Cons
-
Ordering at the bar can get a bit chaotic with long queues, which takes away from the enjoyment if you're after quick service.
-
Smoking around the doors is a bit of a nuisance and can spoil the entrance, making it less pleasant when you're coming and going.
-
There might be some dips in staff morale due to recent changes, which could affect the overall vibe on busier nights.

Went for lunch and the food was very good value for money. We had the mixed grill and surf and turf. We were served by 2 lovely girls, Jess and Morgan who were so nice and friendly.
Food is great , service is en pointe and the atmosphere is perfect for Upton. My daughter’s favourite is the mac and cheese , I think it’s her favourite food in the world! Natalie is wonderful she made sure our food was fast and checked to see if everything was ok.
The staff here are great and always helpful efficient and very friendly. This used to be waiter service up until a few weeks ago. It's chaos now having to order at the bar. Queues are not orderly and can wait ages to be served. It's a shame staff moral has taken a bashing . The once happy and cheerful staff look so tired and flat. Think
they have lost staff also. Thinking of going somewhere else for my weekly tea
Really nice pub and good food at good prices too.
Some good old classics on the menu and the food we had was really nice and had that great grill smell on it.
The pub was only let down by so many people smoking around the doors.
The staff working when we visited were really good and helpful.
A good pub and really well worth going.
Car park is a bit small though so very hard to park at times and don't forget to check in with your registration number when entering else risk a big fine!
Just had a lovely meal here, the lady and the man behind the bar were really pleasant and easy to talk to. We also really enjoyed our meal
