About This Pub
Ah, The Wharf – it's one of those places that really captures the essence of a good old Manchester pub, but with a bit of flair that sets it apart. Picture this: you're sat by the canal, soaking in those beautiful views, maybe with a pint in hand, and the sun's out making the terrace a proper treat. Inside, it's all about those cosy corners for a intimate catch-up or the more energetic spots if you're in the mood for a laugh. The food? Well, it's spot on – think fresh, seasonal dishes that change with the weather, and they've got a wicked array of drinks to pair it with. Events like the pub quizzes add a fun twist, keeping things lively without overwhelming the scene. On the flip side, it does get rammed at times, and I've heard the staff can look a bit frazzled when it's heaving, which might put a dampener on things. Plus, it's not exactly a budget option, so you might want to plan ahead if you're out for a casual night. All in all, it's a gem for a proper pub experience, but go in with realistic expectations and you'll have a brilliant time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The canal-side location is absolutely stunning, with gorgeous views that make it a perfect spot for a relaxing pint or meal outdoors.
-
They've got a brilliant mix of cosy nooks and lively areas inside, so whether you're after a quiet chat or a buzzing atmosphere, there's something for everyone.
-
The food is top-notch – fresh, seasonal menus with cracking dishes like fish and chips that really hit the spot.
-
A fantastic selection of drinks, including cask ales, a decent wine list, loads of gins, and over fifty malts, plus fun events like pub quizzes and cocktail masterclasses.
-
The staff are generally friendly and manage to keep things running smoothly, even when it's packed to the rafters.
Cons
-
It can get incredibly busy, especially on weekends, which sometimes leaves the staff looking a bit stressed and things a tad chaotic.
-
Outdoor seating is lovely in the summer, but it might feel a bit nippy in winter, even with the heaters – you could end up needing that extra layer.
-
It's not the cheapest spot in Manchester, so if you're watching the pennies, the prices for food and drinks might add up quickly.
-
Some folks might find the vibe a touch pretentious, with its mix of historic charm and modern twists, but that's just how it is in places like this.

The Wharf – By the Canal of Doom and Dandelion Regret
So I rock up to The Wharf, a temple of timber and truffle oil nestled on the Canal of Doom, where swans look at you like they know.
A vibe of a Victorian ghost married a to hipster loaf of pumpernickel and had a gastropub baby. Full of pretentious pumpernickels sipping ethically-sourced, barrel-aged disappointment.
The beer mats... Designed by Satan’s intern. I placed my pint on one and instantly wanted to slap myself with a recycled flip-flop, it said "Banter and Pints".
BUT… the scenery is quality. Like Mother Nature’s photo shoot after a few Aperol Spritzes. Ducks strutted by like they were late for yoga.
I ordered chips and it felt like a quest. The waitress was a warlock of sass. The steak sandwich sang to me in falsetto.
Come for the view, stay for the absurdity, leave because of Dave who owns three waistcoats and has a dickie bow named Greta.
The Wharf in Castlefield is a spacious, well-run pub with a strong focus on food and drink. Set along the canal, it offers a scenic spot for a pint or meal, especially on warmer days when the outdoor terrace fills up quickly. Inside, the layout is open yet cosy, with real fires and plenty of seating. The menu covers British classics like fish and chips and Sunday roasts, alongside more refined dishes. Portions are generous, and the quality is consistent. The beer selection is excellent, with 12 hand-pulled ales and ciders, including local brews and rotating guests. Service is friendly and efficient, even when it’s busy. It’s not the cheapest pub in Manchester, but the setting and quality make it worth it. A solid choice for a relaxed meal or drink by the water.
One of our favourite pubs in Manchester.
Great place to drink both in winter and summer - in winter they have a few heaters outdoors but not many so it can be quite chilly, but they bring out a cover so still a great place to sit.
Fish and chips were great, it’s definitely not a cheap place to drink and eat but very relaxed and no loud music!
Only thing to be aware of is the run club meets here on Wednesdays, not an issue but just makes it quite busy. And on a sunny day you will be pressed to find outdoor seating.
Overall a fantastic pub is a great location by the canals.
Visited on Easter Sunday. I hadn't booked as we didn't know what time we'd be there. Even though it was very busy, they still found us a table for 2 upstairs straight away. Staff calmly kept everyone fed and watered. Food was lovely.
I was invited by a group of friends who already frequented the pub and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a large, beautiful, well-organized place with a very pleasant view of the canal in Castlefoeld. It was very busy on Sunday and the staff seemed a little stressed, but we were served by a very friendly and attentive blonde girl who took care of our table upstairs. Unfortunately, we didn't catch her name. I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience good food in a welcoming environment.
