About This Pub
Ah, The Ward Jackson, it's one of those classic Wetherspoons pubs that you can always count on for a good, no-fuss time in Hartlepool. I love how it's tucked away near the church and town centre, making it dead easy to pop in after a stroll or for catching up with mates over some cracking value drinks and meals. The staff are genuinely lovely and efficient, which really adds to the vibe, and there's loads of space both inside and in the beer garden for when you fancy a bit of fresh air. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few grumbles about long waits at the coffee machine – imagine queuing up for ages only to find it's out of milk! And it's not the most accessible spot, with the facilities up a bunch of stairs, which might not suit everyone. Plus, the app can be a right faff to navigate, so you might just stick to ordering at the bar. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back pint or a cheap bite, but it's worth going in with your eyes open to those little niggles – still, I'd say it's worth a visit for the bargains alone.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got a fantastic location right in the heart of Hartlepool, just by the church and town centre, making it super convenient for a quick meet-up or a wander around.
-
The staff are always friendly and efficient, which makes popping in for a drink or a meal feel welcoming and hassle-free.
-
You get brilliant value for money with their drinks and pub grub – it's a classic Wetherspoons spot where you won't break the bank.
-
There's plenty of space inside and a nice, spacious beer garden, perfect for groups or just relaxing with a pint on a sunny day.
Cons
-
Queues can be a real pain, like with the coffee machine where you might wait ages and even find it's out of milk, which puts a dampener on things.
-
Accessibility isn't great, with the gents' facilities up several flights of stairs, which could be tough if you've got mobility issues.
-
The app's a bit of a nuisance to use, so if you're not keen on tech, you'll probably end up ordering the old-fashioned way at the bar.
-
It can feel a tad unreliable at times, with mentions of past incidents that might make you think twice about the atmosphere on busier nights.

I arrived with friends. Went to bar to order food & everything seemed to be OK. Nevertheless I went for a cup of coffee from the machine, only to find a large queue. I waited at least 15 minutes & the gentleman in front of me said he had tried the machine & both had no milk in them & he had asked for milk 10 minutes before. I then asked if they could replace the milk in the machine. The manager came over & raised her voice to me & another lady, she told us several times to sit down. I explained if we sit down we would loose our place in que. She shouted sit down you won't get your coffee any earlier or later. She spoke to us like we were 2 years old. I was so angry with her attitude I swore at her. She then said she would give me a full refund. I was happy with that but I didn't get a full refund & i had nothing to eat or drink. She needs to earn respect. A Customer Service Course needed. I only swore because she raised her voice & shouted at me & another lady Customer. Who also said she was out of order. We only wanted a cup of coffee, which we had paid for.
It's very well located just next to the church and town centre.
There are plenty of seatings indoors; the beer garden is nice and spacious as well
Staff are friendly and efficient
Great place for some good value drinks and pub meals.
Good standard Wetherspoons pub, not an historic place. Absolutely fine for meeting friends. Gents cloakroom far too far up several flights of stairs especially if you have back or walking difficulties.
My sister & I popped in here late one Tuesday morning recently and elected for a table by the windows looking out over to the church and roundabout.
Having duly noted the number of our table I went to the bar to order our breakfast. I had the full English and my sister had a more modest cooked breakfast. Of course, we took full advantage of the free refills of coffee and hot chocolate. Oh, and for breakfast I always like a large glass of chilled orange juice - no ice.
You really can't beat a Wetherspoons for value. We enjoyed our stay here where the staff were pleasant enough. And, as a bonus once you eventually manage to get to the toilets on the first floor they are quite grand...
Popped into this place for a meal (lunch).
Found the app too annoying to use so I ordered the old school way (at the bar).
Plenty of spaces if you like spacious fine dining. I opted to sit near the escape doors at the back of the venue as the last time I was in the same venue it got pretty ugly, and although this time my visit was during the day, I opted for safety over risk.
Anyway. It is very cheap. Two meals and two drinks for just over £10. That's fantastic if you're on a budget, however, my meal wasn't edible. Additionally, the staff who served the meals practically threw the dishes at us, now, I'm not sure if she was practising her discuss throwing skills or she was just having a bad day; either way, it kept me on my toes within regards to catching the plate.
I did need the toilet whilst there. The journey to the ladies took me as far as Peterlee, I'm sure, but the toilets were very clean, if not as cold as a mortuary.
The back is quite pleasing on the eye. I can imagine it being busy and adventurous in the summer.
Best thing about my visit here was definitely leaving.
Interesting experience nonetheless.
