About This Pub

Ah, The Owl – it's one of those places that just warms you up from the inside out, isn't it? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is genuinely excellent; folks are raving about the street food menu with its bold flavours and specials that make every meal feel special. Pair that with a solid selection of drinks and a cosy spot in Hartlepool's cultural district, and you've got yourself a go-to for a laid-back date night or a casual catch-up. The team there seems ace too, always ready to accommodate, whether it's for someone with specific needs or even bringing along the dog – it's that kind of thoughtful touch that makes you want to come back. On the flip side, it's a shame it's shut on Mondays and Tuesdays, which could put a damper on mid-week plans, and if you're not into spicy food, you might find a few dishes a bit too fiery. Plus, the area around it has some rundown buildings, so it might not be the most buzzing spot depending on the time. All in all, it's a solid choice for a memorable outing, as long as you pick the right day and keep those preferences in mind – I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food at The Owl is absolutely spot on – reviewers rave about the delicious street food options, with great flavours and variety that make it hard to choose just one dish.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of drinks, from draught beers to specials, and it's all served in a cosy, welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed evening.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating; they'll go the extra mile, like sorting out options for fussy eaters or making sure everyone feels at home, which really adds to the charm.
  • It's dog-friendly and offers great value, especially with those midweek meal specials that won't break the bank.
  • The venue has a lovely vibe in the heart of Hartlepool's cultural district, tucked away in some historic buildings that give it a unique, hidden gem feel.
Cons
  • It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, which means you might have to plan your visits around the rest of the week and miss out on a spontaneous night out.
  • Some dishes can be a tad spicy, so if you're not keen on heat, you might need to double-check or opt for milder choices to avoid any surprises.
  • Being in an area with some old, neglected buildings around it, the location might not feel as vibrant or inviting for everyone, especially on quieter days.

Went to The Owl for date night yesterday. Really enjoyed it. The menu looked great so it was hard to choose but the food we got was excellent. Great little bar with a good selection of drinks. We took our dog too and had a great evening!

Such a friendly and welcoming team. Went out of their way to accomodate my son who has autism and is a very fussy eater and my Mum (who is just a fussy eater!). The food was delicious and I can’t want to go back.

🦉❤️ New favourite bar/restaurant! Genuinely some of the best food I've had for years, a little on the spicy side, but I love that. Great selection of beer specials. Also fab value for money if you get a midweek meal special.

This is a hidden gem and an indicator of what could be done with what remain of some glorious old buildings in the old “shopping centre” of West Hartlepool, long since abandoned, destroyed or left to rot in favour of the what was the new (now much improved) shopping centre opposite the Grand Hotel. The Owl is warm and welcoming, over two floors. The ground floor in particular is very cosy and kind of intimate. In spite of lots of Eurofizz type lagers (sorry it’s just me: I am an ale drinker) I had an excellent Irish stout and ordered a burger, which I was told by the helpful young barman was very good. It was in fact excellent. I thought it was too much for me to eat even though I was hungry. But I paced myself and ate the lot, without feeling bloated. I also met the young chef at the bar on paying my tab and he was a self-effacing and charming young man by the name of Spencer who was grateful for my compliments on his cooking. All in all, a very pleasant experience and not at all what I expected just off the rather desolate remains of lower Church Street and the once elegant streets off it to the south. In two words: highly recommended. I have eaten in many funky little bars around the world and this is right up there. If only the elected governors of Hartlepool could learn from this place and make downtown Hartlepool a bit more like it used to be and less like a middle America drive through experience. Oh and the price was a pleasant surprise: only £24 for an excellent burger and two pints of stout.

We wanted to try somewhere different for lunch and The Owl definitely did not disappoint. A brilliant selection of drinks, draught and in the bottle, comfortable chairs and some much needed warmth on a very cold November day. We ordered a platter consisting of two smash burgers of our choice with two bao buns and loaded fries. A good selection of flavours to choose from. The taste and flavour, outstanding, every mouthful was enjoyable. Certainly a must try and a definite return in order.
