About This Pub

Ah, The Vine Inn – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Black Notley, near Braintree. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got that warm, inviting atmosphere where the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and the food sounds absolutely spot on, with folks raving about everything from hearty meals to casual buffets. It's especially great for get-togethers; you can book it for parties or events, and they've got fun nights like quizzes and bingo that really get the crowd going. That 4.4 rating speaks volumes – most people are coming away chuffed with their experience. But, let's be honest, it's not all pint-perfect; there have been a few slip-ups, like one event that turned into a bit of a muddle with no one knowing where to go, which could leave you feeling a tad let down if you're not prepared. Plus, with limited opening times – only four days a week, and even fewer in the colder months – it's probably best to plan ahead rather than rock up on a whim. Overall, though, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're after a relaxed spot for a meal or a laugh with mates; just keep an eye on their updates to avoid any disappointments. It's got that classic pub charm that makes you want to come back, once you navigate the quirks.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming and make you feel right at home, which really adds to the cosy vibe of this traditional pub.
  • The food is top-notch – plenty of rave reviews about amazing meals, whether it's a sit-down dinner or something casual like a finger buffet.
  • It's brilliant for events and celebrations; you can hire the place for up to 70 people indoors, perfect for birthdays, weddings, or even a quiz night with friends.
  • With a solid 4.4 rating overall, it's clear this spot knows how to deliver a great atmosphere and fun evenings, especially with things like bingo and live music.
  • Being a traditional pub in a quiet area like Black Notley, it's a lovely spot to unwind without the hustle and bustle of bigger towns.
Cons
  • Opening times can be a bit hit-and-miss, only open four days a week and even less in winter, so you'll need to keep an eye on their Facebook for the latest.
  • Some events have had teething problems, like one review mentioning a shambolic medium night with no clear guidance, which could put a dampener on things.
  • It's not open every day due to costs, which might be frustrating if you're hoping for a spontaneous visit rather than something planned.
  • While most feedback is positive, that one-star review highlights potential disorganisation during busier events, so it's worth double-checking details beforehand.

We came here yesterday for the medium night and all I can say was what a shambles that was!! As we arrived we wasn't greeted by the manger of the pub ( she was getting pissed with her friends) so we had no idea where to go for this event. There was nowhere to sit and nobody knew what was going on. The medium was supposed to start at 7pm but didn't start until 8pm but my guess was that they wanted people to come early to spend money on food and drinks. Now don't get me wrong the medium was ok, we could tell she was stressed as there were to many people in such a small pub. She even had to move tables and chairs around. The whole set up was absolutely shocking. The manger of the pub has ZERO hospitality skills and what seemed to alot if us she just wanted money and to get pissed with her click. She was even talking through alot of the readings with her .ates and just being loud and obnoxious. Wouldn't recommend going there for a quiet drink or any event to be fair.

First time in The Vine for a meal and have to say it was amazing! We have lived in White Notley for a couple of years and thought we'd try somewhere different for a change. Incredible food! Lovely landlady, Great place and atmosphere. Certainly beats one of our locals! We will return definitely!
