About This Pub
Ah, The Test Match in West Bridgford – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its historic Art Deco building and that welcoming feel, especially if you're a fan of real ales or catching the big games like the Women's Euros. I have to say, the selection of beers is spot on, always well-kept, and the atmosphere manages to be cosy despite the size, with lovely decor that makes you want to linger. The staff can be absolute gems too, bending over backwards to help out and make recommendations that hit the mark, which really adds to the charm. On the food front, when it's good, it's genuinely tasty – think sharing plates of tapas that leave you satisfied – but honestly, there've been times it's fallen flat, like overcooked mains or meals that just don't live up to the hype, and that's a shame because it can sour an otherwise great visit. Service isn't always spot-on either, with a few stories of complaints being brushed off or unexpected table moves, which might put a dampener on things. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed pint and some sporty fun, but I'd suggest going in with realistic expectations and maybe opting for the drinks over a full meal to make the most of it.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
Fantastic selection of real ales that are always well-kept, making it a top spot for beer enthusiasts.
-
The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed, even in a larger space, with interesting historic decor that adds real character.
-
Staff are super friendly and go the extra mile, like offering great recommendations and making everyone feel welcome.
-
Good food options when it hits the mark, such as tasty tapas dishes that are filling and flavoursome.
-
Brilliant for watching live sports, with events like the Women's Euros or rugby tours, and plenty of facilities like a beer garden and dog-friendly areas.
Cons
-
Food quality can be inconsistent, with some dishes coming out overcooked or inedible, like disappointing fish and chips or steak sandwiches.
-
Occasional lapses in service, such as not handling complaints well or asking folks to move tables midway through a meal, which can feel a bit off-putting.
-
It might not always deliver a seamless experience, especially if you're after a reliable meal rather than just drinks and vibes.

Really nice pub with good selection of real ales. Even though the pub is large, it had a nice cosy relaxed atmosphere. Really interesting decor, including the revolving door. Excellent service from Charlie, he couldn't do enough to help us and made good recommendations too, made the place very welcoming.
Very tasty sticky toffee pudding.
Games were on hand if you want some entertainment and they even had proper poker tables for poker night.
Interesting pub, we'll definately be back.
Just been to the Test Match in West Bridgford. Love this pub , such character, beautiful pictures. Historic I've introduced my friends to this pub. Good food, we shared 5 Tapas dishes , so tasty and filling. Good service with Alfie and Charlie, making sure everything we needed was got for us. Excellent plac to sit inside or out on a sunny day.
Great local pub in West Bridgford
Fab selection of real ales which are well kept. Good selection of other beers and drinks. Good food and responding well to new management. Super friendly staff who welcome new customers and look after the regulars. Special mentions to Katie and Charlie
Steak sandwich was inedible. When I complained at the bar (when I was finally acknowledged) I was met with a “so, I don’t do the cooking” and he tried to walk off….. asked if he would pay £10 for that he responded “no,”… I asked to speak with the manager and was bluntly told “they aren’t in”….
He may be new, he may be on minimum rate but he deserves a massive pay cut…
Did speak to the lady in charge, she asked what the issue was, I pointed to the sandwich and she said “I’ll sort it”… she was very very pleasant, helpful and polite.
The replacement sandwich was slightly better, but my appetite had gone. Oh and the fries didn’t make it back
Poor Food & Unwelcoming Staff.
Ordered fish & chips, fish was over cooked & the chips were a kind of standard frozen version. The Bow Buns were dense, dry overcooked skewers & bland crispy squid. We were asked to move half way through our meal from a non reserved table the staff felt no need to intervene so because we have newly moved to the area we only moved to keep the peace. The old women member of staff with glasses had awful customer service & seemed to be bitter towards us for some reason.
I had high hopes coming here but I have to say I am very disappointed. Even another customer was embarrassed & approached us to apologise for the awful experience. Unfortunately I would not be returning & I will not recommend the Test Match to anyone.
