About This Pub

Ah, The Swimmer at the Grafton Arms – it's one of those classic London pubs that you hear about and think, 'This could be my new local favourite.' From what I've gathered chatting about it, the staff really shine through; they're warm and professional, always up for a laugh or a quick chat, which makes the place feel inviting right from the get-go. The vibe is spot on too – relaxed and cosy, ideal for sinking into a corner with friends over a well-poured pint from their varied beer selection. And let's not forget, some dishes like the fish and chips are bang on, generous portions that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank. But, and there's always a but with these spots, the food isn't always a sure bet. A few have mentioned the roast coming out bland or the Thai green curry tasting more like reheated leftovers than something fresh, which is a real pity when you're in the mood for a proper pub grub. It's self-service at points, which keeps things casual but might not suit if you're after more attentive service. Overall, I'd say it's worth a visit for the drinks and atmosphere, but maybe stick to the safer menu options or pop in just for a bevvy to keep things on the positive side. It's got that high rating for a reason, but like any good chat over a pint, it's all about managing expectations and enjoying the bits that work well.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and always friendly, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's got a really nice, relaxed vibe that's perfect for catching up with mates over a pint.
  • They've a great selection of beers and drinks to suit all tastes, which is always a winner for a good night out.
  • Some of the food hits the spot, like the mac and cheese or the massive fish and chips, offering good value for a moderate price.
  • As a local spot, it's got that community feel and high marks overall, making it a reliable go-to in London.
Cons
  • The food can be a bit hit or miss – some dishes like the roast or Thai green curry have left folks disappointed or even put off entirely.
  • Certain menu items, such as the mushrooms with cheese, fall short on quality and quantity, which is a shame when you're looking for a solid meal.
  • With self-service at times, it might not feel as attentive as you'd hope, especially if you're after more hands-on service.
  • A few visits have been underwhelming, with complaints about tasteless or inedible options, so it's worth checking what's on offer before diving in.

Go for drinks, bar staff are lovely and nice vibe in the pub but SKIP THE FOOD. Mac and cheese was ok. The roast is tasteless do not get it but regardless we stomached it. The thai green curry was inedible, not one fresh ingredient or vegetable in it, tasted like gravy. Politely went to the bar to explain, we never usually say anything but we had to complain about the curry as it was that bad. The chef overheard then called my boyfriend over to the kitchen where he argued with him directly and refused to do anything. Very confused why we were speaking to the chef directly, this is something for front of house staff. He had to bargain for a drink WITH THE CHEF as compensation as a refund was refused despite not eating it. The most uncomfortable experience with customer service I have ever had. Complaints happen but it is how you respond which is important.

Our Go-To Pub – Always a Great Experience! We’ve been coming to The Swimmer at the Grafton Arms many times now, and it never disappoints. The service is always friendly and professional, and the food is consistently delicious – you can tell they care about quality. It's got a lovely relaxed atmosphere, perfect for catching up with friends. We especially enjoy coming on Tuesdays for the quiz night – it's loads of fun and adds a great buzz to the evening. Whether it's a casual drink, a tasty meal, or just a chilled evening out, this place has become one of our favourites in London!

I’m literally sitting at their table writing this review because I genuinely don’t understand how this place has such high ratings. Maybe I was just unlucky today, or there’s a different chef working, but we came specifically to try their roast lunch/dinner after my boyfriend did a lot of research based on the glowing reviews. The bar staff were friendly and the drinks were fine, but everything went downhill when the food arrived. The waiter brought out the dishes, but the plates were so hot it was obvious the food had been reheated—plates and all. Not only that, but the waiter didn’t even bother to warn us about the temperature, and I ended up burning my hand. Now, about the roast beef… The meat was okay, but the gravy tasted like it came straight from a packet—one of those pre-made powder mixes, definitely not fresh. The roast potatoes were the biggest disappointment. They were soggy, bland, and clearly not freshly made—tasted like they’d been sitting around since at least the day before. Overall, this was such a letdown. I would never come back here, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Great pub with a variety of beers to suit everyone! The fish and chips was enormous so really worth its price. On the other hand, the mushrooms with cheese were disappointing as there almost no mushrooms, I wouldn't recommend it. The service was adequate, it's a self service so you have to go to the bar to order anything. The atmosphere is the classic one of a British pub. Bonus point for having a nice yard so you can sit outside when the weather is nice.
