About This Pub
Ah, The Sugar Loaf – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away in Ab Kettleby on the A606. I've got to say, the food steals the show; their pies and puddings are homemade and fresh, cooked to order, and at a reasonable price too – perfect for a midweek treat or a weekend wind-down. The service is spot on as well, with staff who make you feel welcome and cared for, and the atmosphere is just cosy enough for a chat over a pint or a family meal. That garden area sounds ideal for sunnier days, adding a bit of outdoor charm. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; there've been a few reports of hygiene slips, like smoking in the wrong spots and some rubbish piling up outside, which is a shame because it could put a damper on things. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.5, most people are coming away chuffed, so if you're heading that way, I'd recommend giving it a go – just maybe keep an eye on those details and book ahead to avoid any hassles. All in all, it's a solid spot for good food and a laugh, as long as you take the rough with the smooth.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is absolutely spot on – think hearty home-cooked pies and puddings that really hit the spot, especially on their Wednesday Pie and Pudding night for a bargain price.
-
Service is warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's got a lovely cosy atmosphere, with a friendly bar and a nice decking and garden area for enjoying a drink or meal outdoors when the weather's playing ball.
-
Prices are fair for the quality, so you get good value without breaking the bank.
-
They're clearly popular, with plenty of positive vibes from folks who've had a great time, making it a solid choice for a relaxed outing.
Cons
-
There have been a few grumbles about hygiene, like staff smoking in no-smoking zones and some mess around the outdoor areas that could attract unwanted visitors.
-
The place can get quite busy, so it's wise to book ahead or you might miss out on a table.
-
One or two mentions of things feeling a bit untidy in certain spots, which takes away from the overall charm.

Staff smoking in clearly sign posted No Smoking Area …
Non smoking area filthy which leads to kitchen area
Mountain of rubbish from food prep all dumped in car park area can only attract VERMIN
Cannot understand why they allow this shocking lack of hygiene to continue
Great food, you do need to book nowadays though as tables get taken early.
Had a nice lunch there during the Christmas break. Very nice Steak & Ale pie for me, & my friend said the Gammon Steak was the best he'd eaten. Nice cosy atmosphere.
I came for a birthday celebration and had pie and pudding. It was absolutely the best pie I have eaten in a long time. I had the steak and Stilton, the chips were fabulous too. Treacle sponge and custard for pudding, what a treat. Great service, great atmosphere, great value, would definitely recommend
Pleasant atmosphere, tasty food. Good portion size. I wouldn't bring the kids, but it was perfect for our mini-valentines dinner.
