About This Pub
Ah, the Stump and Candle in Boston – it's one of those classic pubs that feels like it's been around forever, right in the heart of the market place. On the upside, I have to say, the drinks deals are spot on; you've got a brilliant range of ales and lagers at prices that make you wonder why you'd go anywhere else, and it's brilliant for catching the big games with all those screens dotted about. It's got that community feel for some, where you can pop in for a relaxed pint and maybe strike up a chat. But, let's be honest, it's not all rosy – a few mates have shared stories about the place looking a tad neglected, with grubby floors and whiffy bathrooms that could do with a good clean. And while the staff are meant to be the heart of the place, they've come across as a bit short with some visitors, plus there are tales of it getting a bit too insular with certain crowds. Overall, if you're after a no-fuss spot for cheap bevvies and sport, it's worth a try, but maybe go in with your eyes open and pick a quiet time to avoid any hassle.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The drinks are really affordable, with a great selection of beers, lagers, ciders, and real ales that won't break the bank – perfect for a casual catch-up.
-
It's a top spot for watching live sports, with loads of big screens showing football, rugby, and more, so you can cheer on your team in a lively atmosphere.
-
Some folks have had a really welcoming vibe here, especially if you're into the local scene, making it feel like a proper community hub.
Cons
-
A few people have mentioned the place feeling a bit rundown, with issues like sticky floors and unpleasant smells that could put you off your pint.
-
The staff aren't always the friendliest; some reviews talk about them being rude or abrasive, which might make for an uncomfortable visit.
-
It can get a bit cliquey inside, with certain groups being openly aggressive to newcomers, so it might not be the most inclusive spot for everyone.

Great priced lovely handpulled real ales 2 on. Plus a huge selection of reasonably priced beers, lagers, ciders and spirits.
A decaying pub in a decaying town. The staff are unfriendly and downright rude. The place is unkept, smells, and rundown. The bathrooms reek of urine with sticky floors. I wouldn’t dare touch anything for fear of having to have shots afterward. There are better places you can spend your money and time. I think this place might be one of the reasons why Boston is so run down and falling apart. I would not go back to this place in a million years. My advice for you is to not set foot in this place and pass it onto your family and friends.
Decent pint (of lager) the hobgoblin was a bit chewy unfortunately but the beer is
cheaper than pretty much anywhere else
Plenty of big screens to watch sport on
Awful place in an amazing location.
The pub itself was dirty, The patrons were "cliquey" and openly rude and aggressive to people outside of their little circle. This circle obviously included the landlord who was similarly abrasive
borderline aggressive and wholly unpleasant.
This is a "local pub for local people" in a very league of gentlemen manner.
Avoid this at all costs unless you like people watching and by people I mean that in the loosest sense of the term.
Very friendly pub. Loads of tvs to watch sports. If we are in Boston again will definitely be heading back here. Landlord a Liverpool fan but you can't have everything 🤣
