About This Pub

Ah, the Stag & Monkey – it's one of those reliable spots in Hartlepool that you can pop into for a solid pint and a bite to eat, and I've got to say, it's got that comforting pub feel that makes you want to linger. The food really stands out; think big, hearty portions of pub classics that leave you satisfied, and specials like the vegan mushroom pie are a hit even if you're not usually into that sort of thing. Plus, the staff are generally lovely and cheerful, always up for a chat or helping out, which adds to the warm atmosphere. It's spot on for families too, with things like outdoor play areas and being dog-friendly, so it's easy to bring the kids or the pooch along for a relaxed afternoon. And if you're into sports, they've got all the live action sorted with Sky and TNT, plus a nice beer garden to soak it all in. On the flip side, though, service isn't always perfect – I've heard tales of orders getting mixed up or, worse, finding something unwelcome like hair in the food, which is a real shame and can spoil an otherwise good visit. The manager might not handle complaints as smoothly as you'd hope, coming across a bit abrupt at times. Overall, it's a decent choice for a casual get-together, especially with those budget-friendly deals, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations to enjoy the highs and navigate the lows. If you're in the area, give it a go and see what you think – it's all about that balanced pub experience, innit?

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is spot on – big portions and classics like the vegan mushroom pie that even meat lovers rave about, making it a great spot for a hearty meal.
  • Staff are always helpful and cheerful, adding a warm welcome that makes you feel right at home.
  • It's family-friendly with plenty of facilities like outdoor play areas and being dog-friendly, perfect for a relaxed day out with the little ones or your furry mate.
  • Reasonable prices mean you can tuck into a good meal without breaking the bank, especially with deals like 'Tuck in for a tenner'.
  • They've got a great atmosphere for watching live sports, with options like Sky Sports and a beer garden to enjoy the action.
Cons
  • Service can be inconsistent, with some reports of incorrect orders and even finding hair in the food, which puts a dampener on the experience.
  • The manager might come across as a bit snotty if there's an issue, making it tricky to sort out problems without feeling brushed off.
  • It seems geared towards families, so if you're after a quiet pint in a more adult-oriented setting, it might not hit the mark.

Last Saturday I had to take a motorcycle for service around the corner from the pub. Pint of John Smith's and breakfast. The food was well cooked nothing to complain about. The staff are very helpful and cheerful. I'll be back probably next week when I collect my bike.

This pub seems to cater for those people that want to dine with children. I took my child here for some lunch. We sat in the dedicated "family" area, just the two of us. I ordered food and drinks via the app which was easy to download and register. The app took our drink order too so I didn't have to leave my child alone whilst I went to the bar. I didn't receive all of the drinks I paid for though sadly. I couldn’t find a member of staff to enquire about that. The food was bog standard food, you get what you pay for in establishments like this. My child cleared the plate. Whilst we were dining there was a child behind us using chairs and a large area to throw a ball at targets, I'm not sure that's acceptable behaviour whilst people eat, but it happened anyway. Total cost for food and drinks (including the drink I was charged for and didn't receive) was just over £17. Probably would return if my child wanted to. Maybe on a better day so he can make use of the outdoor play area. Dogs are welcome in this pub too.

Food and service was shocking. Manager was a snotty fella who didn’t like it if you complained or held them accountable for an incorrect order. Ordered food kitchen got the order wrong, once the order was corrected there was then human hair found in the food🤮 supposedly a refund was made however it’s been well over a week the money (£40) came out of pending transactions and has still not been returned into my bank! Obviously haven’t processed me a refund, rang 2x about it, 1 person said to come back into the pub to “reprocess the refund” another said I have to email with proof of when my purchase was to have a word with finance to ask why i haven’t been refunded. However to me I am being fobbed off and robbed and there saying anything to try and keep me happy and off there backs to avoid giving me my money back. This place has massively gone down hill

Very reasonable pricing, nice and clean, bacon tastes like bacon here unlike a different pub we used to go to, the vegan mushroom pie is lush (I'm a meat eater) definitely recommend
