About This Pub

Ah, South Durham Social Club, what a spot! From what I've gathered chatting through the reviews, it's got that warm, community feel that's just spot on for a relaxed evening with mates. The staff really shine here; they're super welcoming and make everyone feel like part of the gang, which is always a winner in my book. Then there's the entertainment – live bands on Sundays and fun nights with quizzes or bingo – it's clear this place knows how to keep things lively without going overboard. Drinks are a bargain too, with good prices and a decent variety, so you can settle in for the night without worrying about the tab. On the flip side, it's tucked away a bit, so if you're not from around Hartlepool, it might take some effort to get there, and honestly, the lack of online details like a website or clear opening times is a shame – I found myself wishing for an easy way to check what's happening. It has a traditional working club charm, which is fabulous if you fancy that no-nonsense vibe, but it might feel a tad dated for those after something more upscale. All in all, if you're up for a genuine, down-to-earth pub experience with top-notch hospitality and entertainment, give The Steelies a go – it's got that heartwarming touch that makes it stand out, even with a few rough edges.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's got a fantastic atmosphere with great live bands and entertainment like quizzes and bingo, perfect for a lively night out.
  • Drinks are reasonably priced and there's a nice selection, so you won't break the bank while enjoying a pint or two.
  • The place is clean and tidy, which always makes for a more enjoyable visit, especially for a casual social club like this.
Cons
  • It seems a bit out of the way for some folks, as it's a fair trek if you're not local, though the effort might just be worth it.
  • There's no website or much online info, which makes it tricky to check what's on or get updates before heading over.
  • The operating hours aren't clearly listed, so you might end up turning up when it's not open, which is a bit of a nuisance.
  • It has that classic working man's club vibe, which is brilliant if that's your thing, but it might not suit everyone looking for something more modern.

Absolutely top venue, there are always great bands on here. It's a long way for us to travel to, but it's always worth it. Tommy who puts the bands on is an absolute legend, everyone is so friendly here, we will always go back again. Two years later, it's just as good. Now back for the 4th year, the place has had a full refurb

Still a great night's entertainment even though the band was cancelled. Fun quiz, bingo and a canny turn who belted out a selection of 60's right up to present day. Good beer prices, nice selection of drinks
