About This Pub
You know, when I think about The Square & Compasses, it really brings a smile – it's one of those pubs that captures the essence of a relaxed countryside escape. Picture yourself in this 17th-century freehouse, surrounded by a cosy dining room and a little garden, where the focus is on enjoying top-quality home-cooked meals and chatting over local real ales or a glass of wine. From what I've gathered, the food stands out as a real winner, with folks raving about everything from fresh specials to Sunday lunches that make any gathering feel special. The team there are just lovely, always on hand to make sure you're looked after, which adds to that welcoming feel. On the flip side, it's not the most convenient spot, being a drive out in the quiet hamlet of Fuller Street, and with more limited hours during the week, you might find yourself needing to check the schedule before heading over. All in all, it's a brilliant choice if you're after an authentic pub experience away from the crowds, but it pays to plan it right for the full enjoyment.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is wonderfully traditional and cosy, like stepping back in time to a proper countryside hideaway where you can relax with a pint and good company.
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious home-cooked dishes like haddock and chips or a hearty chicken pie that leave you feeling well satisfied.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick drink or enjoying a meal with friends.
-
It's a refreshing change to find a place without Wi-Fi, encouraging proper chats and connections over local ales and fine wines in a muddy-boot-friendly setting.
Cons
-
It's tucked away in the Essex countryside, which means it might take a bit of effort to get to, especially if you're not local or driving from further afield.
-
The opening hours are a tad limited, with closures on certain days, so it's best to plan ahead rather than hoping for a spontaneous visit.

Very much an old style pub, decorated mostly with old wine bottles. No internet inside so people have to talk to each other instead. We were made very welcome - a group of 10 aging walkers, but there were plenty of other people there. My haddock and chips was excellent, and everyone enjoyed there food, although some found the pie pastry a bit hard.
Excellent lunch. Very quaint pub with good service, comprehensive menu & tasty food. Slightly off the beaten track, but worth the drive (we visited from North London to meet up with a family member from Essex)
Lovely pub restaurant for a Sunday lunch birthday meal. Great choices, delicious food
Lovely evening, menu was good and the food great. Helpful, friendly staff.
Will definitely visit again.
Another visit, this time for afternoon tea. Best I've had, another 5 🌟 .
Dinner here was fabulous! I had the chicken pie special and it was delicious, my parents had the venison and pork crochet which they said they loved. We also tried the ratatouille special which was lovely and fresh. All the staff was friendly and welcoming, I will definitely be coming back again soon!
