About This Pub
Ah, The Sportsman – what a spot it is, isn't it? I mean, you've got to love a pub that's managed to keep things welcoming and down-to-earth while offering some real highlights, like that superb Guinness that's bang on the money, and the staff who always greet you with a smile, making every visit feel like catching up with old mates. The atmosphere really shines with good music and fun events like the Wednesday open mic nights, which can turn an ordinary evening into something memorable, and don't forget that spacious garden with its own bar – it's a lifesaver on warmer days or when things get a bit hectic inside. But let's be straight, it's not without its quirks; the inside can feel a tad cramped and narrow, especially on busier nights, and if you're after a full menu, you might be limited to simple options like toasties, with the odd hiccup like a dodgy coffee machine. Still, with affordable prices and it being one of the few places open late, it's easy to see why folks keep coming back for more. All in all, if you're in Bishop Auckland and fancy a pint with a side of good craic, I'd say give it a go – you might just find your new local haunt.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are always so friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
The beer is top-notch, especially the Guinness – it's as good as anything you'd get in Ireland, and that's saying something!
-
They've got a cracking atmosphere with canny music, and events like the open mic night on Wednesdays add a fun, lively vibe.
-
The big garden with its own bar is a brilliant spot, perfect for when you want to escape the crowds and enjoy a drink outside.
-
It's great for a bit of darts or just chilling with mates, and the prices are spot on – nothing too steep for a good night out.
-
Being open late, especially on Saturdays, makes it the go-to place when everywhere else has shut up shop.
Cons
-
The inside space is a bit narrow and can feel quite squashed, especially when it's busy, which might not suit everyone.
-
Food options are limited at times – sometimes it's just toasties on offer, and things like the coffee machine can be out of order.
-
There's a £1 entry fee, which is fair enough for what you get, but it might put some off if they're just popping in for a quick one.
-
It can get crowded, so if you're not keen on a packed pub, you might find yourself heading to the garden more often than not.

Can't beat the merry monk on a Saturday night. Its where everyone comes together at the end of night and is the only place open late. Staff are always friendly. Only downside is its very narrow and you feel squashed but it has a big garden, that also has a bar so you can get sorted from outside, which makes up for it. Canny music, alright prices, what more could you want. Does cost £1 to get in which is honestly fair as its the place to be.
Sell beer so we are happy nice music nice beer don't need anything else
A great blend a modern/traditional pub. Good atmosphere and good beer ( also good gin, according to my other half). Wednesday night is open mic night hosted by Neil Gibson. Always an entertaining experience. Go on, give it a try. You'll not be disappointed.
Quality food at very local prices - highly recommended. Great service.
I come in here quite often to play darts with my son early on in day . It's a really good darts set up. .I have never been in later at night when it's a night club.
The beer is really, really good. I drink Guinness and its the best pint in bishop Auckland , and I would say as good as the pints I have had in Ireland .
It's comfortable and the staff are also friendly. I thoroughly recommend it.
