About This Pub
Ah, El Castillo – it's one of those places that really hits the spot if you're in the mood for a taste of Spain without leaving the North East. From what I've gathered from folks' chats about it, the food stands out as a real winner; imagine tucking into beautifully presented small plates bursting with fresh, seasonal ingredients and a clever local twist that makes everything feel just right. The staff are absolute stars too, always going the extra mile with friendly service that makes you feel welcome, whether you're popping in for a quick lunch or celebrating something special – I love hearing how they handle things like food allergies or add a little surprise to desserts. The vibe is lovely and relaxed, with smart decor that fits perfectly in the historic town centre, making it ideal for a casual get-together over a glass of wine or a cocktail. On the downside, though, it's not open every day, so you might have to plan around that, and those smaller portions mean it could leave you a bit peckish if you're not careful with ordering. Plus, it might stretch the budget a touch, but honestly, for the quality and experience, it's worth it every now and then. All in all, if you're a fan of tapas and fancy a spot that's got the goods on flavour and atmosphere, give El Castillo a go – it's got that balanced charm that'll make your visit worthwhile.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is an absolute delight, with fresh, flavourful tapas that blend classic Spanish tastes with local North East ingredients – think outstanding dishes like the best pork I've heard of and a changing menu that keeps things exciting.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, making every visit feel warm and personal, whether it's for a spontaneous lunch or a special occasion like a birthday.
-
The atmosphere is spot on – immaculate decor and a beautifully presented space right in the heart of Bishop Auckland, perfect for a relaxed catch-up over drinks.
-
They've got a great selection of wines and cocktails that pair wonderfully with the meals, adding that extra touch to make the experience memorable.
Cons
-
It only opens five days a week, which might catch you out if you're planning a spontaneous trip on a quiet day.
-
As it's tapas, the portions are on the smaller side, so if you're after a hearty meal, you might need to order a few plates to feel satisfied.
-
Prices could add up quickly with all those tempting small plates and drinks, making it a tad pricey for everyday visits.

Called today for a business lunch and wow absolutely beautiful many thanks and the pork was easily the best I’ve ever tasted, easy 5 stars so pleased your in our Town. Staff were great it’s immaculate and the decor is fab also the Santiago cake was unreal as it all was really 👌
Was given this as a recommendation by two people that we met at different times whilst staying on holiday near Copley. The recommendations weren't wrong! The food was excellent and the front of house staff - all youngsters - were very good. Nice to see a restaurant with appropriate wines - only Spanish, Portuguese and Argentinian. It seemed quiet for a Friday night but we are from NW London so are used to places being much busier. If you are ever near Bishop Auckland then give this restaurant a try.
Booked spur of the moment for lunch today, what a great idea that turned out to be!
First time customer, will definitely be back. Food was excellent and staff are all 5 star.
The restaurant is beautifully presented and maintained by the staff, 2 tables that finished while we were there were cleared and cleaned immediately. A credit to Bishop Auckland, would highly recommend!
Outstanding Experience at El Castillo Tapas Restaurant (23rd Jan 2025)
From the moment we walked into El Castillo, we were blown away. The food was absolutely outstanding—beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. Every dish was crafted with such care and attention to detail, it was clear the chef took great pride in their work.
The service was equally amazing. The staff were attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The ambience of the restaurant was perfect—warm, inviting, and full of charm, creating the ideal setting for a wonderful dining experience.
On top of all this, the pricing was very reasonable for the quality of food and service provided. El Castillo is a real gem in Bishop Auckland, and we will definitely be back. I cannot recommend this place highly enough! Great Food, Great Service and a Great Evening!!
First visit for my daughter's birthday and the chef did a special addition to our desserts for her. Great food, wine, cocktails and Katie our server was lovely. We're going to make this a girls thing monthly at least! A definite 10 out of 10 all round.
And, I had no problems due to my food allergies.
