About This Pub
Ah, The Smithfield – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper hidden gem in Derby, you know? From what I've gathered, it's been around since 1840 and even snagged some awards for its beers, which says a lot about the passion they put into it. The real highlight is the incredible range of ales and unusual brews; it's all about discovering something different, and that makes it such a fun spot if you're up for an adventure in a glass. Perched right by the river, the beer garden is an absolute winner on a sunny day, and the whole place has this warm, rustic charm that brings back memories of old-school boozers without feeling outdated. The staff are spot on too, always ready with a smile and a recommendation, and there are live music nights that really liven things up. On the downside, it might be a bit too laid-back midweek if you're craving a lively crowd, and if food's your thing, well, it doesn't seem to be their strong suit – think more about the drinks than a full dinner. All in all, it's a cracking choice for a relaxed catch-up with friends, especially if you're a fan of real ale, but it's worth keeping in mind those quieter moments to set your expectations right.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
Fantastic selection of real ales and unusual beers that make every visit an adventure – perfect if you're into trying something new.
-
Stunning riverside location with a brilliant beer garden, ideal for soaking up the sun and enjoying views of the river Derwent.
-
That charming, rustic and retro feel that transports you back to traditional pubs of yesteryear, full of history and character.
-
Friendly and helpful staff who create a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy to settle in and have a good chat.
-
Regular live music and events that add a lively buzz, especially on weekends, turning it into a proper community hub.
Cons
-
It can get a bit quiet during the week, so if you're after a buzzing vibe, you might find it more relaxed than rowdy.
-
Not much on the food front from what I've seen, so it might not be the best spot if you're looking for a hearty meal alongside your drink.
-
The focus on cask ales and less mainstream options means it could feel a tad niche if you're more into standard lagers or modern brews.

Amazing pub with a nice rustic and local feel. It definitely brings back memories of pubs bygone and the selection of beers is great too
Fantastic selection of beverages. Plenty of seating and not too busy on my visit. Great location and a lot of history in this area.
Called in here after going to the Brunswick and Alexander Hotel. This pub was another great place to visit. A lively place (derby was at home). Very friendly place, great selection of ales and a belting beer garden right on the river. I would definitely go back here when I next visit.
Terrific pub! Very retro. Unbelievable choice of ales. I was there midweek, so a bit quiet. I expect it's buzzing on a weekend with live bands too. Derby seems to be paradise for real ale drinkers 😊🍻
Great music venue, lovely outset size overlooking the river Derwent. Lovely crowd for the Sunday afternoon band & friendly, helpful staff. Will definitely be back in future! Afternoon gigs particularly fit around my schedule so that was great to see! Thank you!
