About This Pub
Ah, The Royal Standard – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Derby, you know? I've got to say, the real highlight is their fantastic range of cask ales and craft beers from nearby breweries; it's clear they're passionate about supporting the area's talent, and trying something new on tap always makes for a fun afternoon. The roof terrace with views of the River Derwent is just brilliant on a nice day – imagine sipping a cold one while watching the world go by. The staff are dead lovely too, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly. On the flip side, it seems like food isn't always on the menu, which is a shame if you're hoping for more than just drinks, and it can look a bit understated from the street, so you might miss it at first glance. Plus, with varying opening times and the occasional quiet spell, it's best suited for those relaxed catch-ups rather than a big night out. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a taste of tradition with a modern edge – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area, but keep those expectations balanced for the full picture.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
They've got a brilliant selection of local ales and craft beers that really showcase the best of Derbyshire – perfect if you're a beer enthusiast like me.
-
The roof terrace overlooking the River Derwent is an absolute gem, especially on a sunny day; it's such a relaxing spot to unwind with a pint.
-
The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
It's got that lovely historic charm with a modern twist, offering a cosy atmosphere and plenty of seating for a good chat or even planning a small event.
Cons
-
Food options seem a bit hit or miss – some folks mentioned no grub on offer, which could be a downside if you're after a proper meal with your drink.
-
From the outside, it might look a tad quiet or unassuming, so you could walk past without realising what's inside.
-
Opening hours vary throughout the week, and it's not open every day, which might make it tricky if you're popping by spontaneously.
-
It can get a bit laid-back, almost too quiet at times, so if you're in the mood for a lively buzz, it might not always hit the mark.

Dunno about the food and service but looks awesome from the outside
A wonderful traditional pub 2 minutes walk from the market place. Great range of ales, a variety of rooms including a roof terrace which overlooks the river that's popular in Summer. Decor is rustic with a modern twist. Enjoy. M
Former Derby brewing pub now under new ownership with a much wider selection of beers but no food.
Back to historical name, never too busy it's well worth a boozy afternoon & when it's sunny there's a lovely roof top seating area & terrace.
Plenty of seating & a well drilled bar team quickly clearing the bar, too.

Looks like an empty place on approach. But inside they have regular tap beers and real ales available. Staff were friendly and polite. Beer was good. Upstairs available to enjoy your drink. Enjoyed my visit.
A popular real ale pub with friendly and welcoming staff. A great range of beers including those from the Derby Brewing Company. We also had some of their burgers, which were very tasty and pretty good value. It's also very conveniently located near the city centre
