About This Pub

Ah, The Shoulder of Mutton in Mirfield – it's one of those pubs that really warms you up on a chilly evening, you know? From the reviews, it sounds like they've nailed the food side of things; folks are raving about the backyard BBQ on weekends and those hearty sizzler menus, which seem like a brilliant choice for a satisfying meal. The snug is another highlight, with live gigs creating a buzzing atmosphere that's just the ticket if you're up for some music and a chat. And let's not forget the friendly staff and perks like free pool on Mondays – it's those little touches that make it feel like a proper local spot. On the downside, though, quiz nights might not be everyone's idea of fun; a couple of people mentioned it feeling a bit too rule-heavy, with the landlady getting a tad distracted and service not quite hitting the mark. Still, with a generally upbeat vibe and flexible opening hours, I'd say it's worth popping in for a pint and a plate – just maybe plan around the events if you're after a smooth night out. All in all, it's got that homely pub charm, but like any place, it's not perfect, so go with an open mind and you'll likely have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely brilliant, especially the backyard BBQ on weekends – it's well worth trying if you're after a proper treat.
  • It has a fantastic atmosphere in the snug, perfect for live music gigs with a band; it's a cosy spot that really gets the vibe going.
  • The staff are lovely and welcoming, with nice extras like free pool on Mondays that add a fun touch to a quiet day out.
  • Overall, it's a welcoming pub with a solid reputation, making it a great place for a relaxed get-together or a bite to eat.
Cons
  • Quiz nights can feel a bit like going back to school with strict rules and interruptions, which might put some off.
  • Service can sometimes fall short, like when the landlady gets too caught up in events and isn't as attentive as you'd hope.
  • A few experiences have been disappointing, with issues like finger-clicking over minor things, making it less enjoyable for groups.

We are locals of the shoulder but due to our working patterns don't get a chance to eat here but we did a couple of weeks ago when we finished early so took the opportunity to sample the sizzler menu. My wife had the 20oz mega mixed grill sizzler & I opted for the festive pigs in blankets sizzler. Both came freshly cooked sizzling away on a hot skillet served on roasted peppers & onions with a tortilla wrap, corn cobette & amazing homemade chips it’s certainly not for the faint hearted. My wife looked like she had over done it with her choice and was going to ask to take some home but it was too good not to finish & I helped her polish it off. Stuffed doesn’t come close it’s proper fresh cooked food & for the price extremely generous portions & we absolutely recommend you give it a try. The added bonus is a friendly warm welcoming local with a good selection of drinks to boot.

Quiz night is like going back to school days. Don't do this. Don't do that. The landlady is so engrossed in her own quiz night, she can't be bothered to serve. Our group have spent good money in here tonight and it's been a terrible experience. Finger clicking to stop someone leaning on a pool table is an all time low. Avoid!
