About This Pub
Ah, The Ship Inn in Middlestone – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper British gem, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this lovely, old-school charm with friendly faces behind the bar who go out of their way to make your visit special. Folks are raving about the atmosphere, with its ship-themed decor and that inviting wood-burning fire, making it ideal for a laid-back afternoon or evening with mates. The food's a real highlight too; think hearty Sunday roasts that are spot-on, fresh homemade burgers for the little ones, and even pizzas that one lot said were the best they'd tasted. And let's not forget the beer – Hawkstone comes highly recommended for that authentic pub experience. But, to be fair, it's not all smooth sailing; there was that one review where a meal fell flat with an off pint and a disappointing chicken parmo, leaving them out of pocket at £34 and feeling queasy. Plus, if you're someone who likes to stay connected, the lack of WiFi and dodgy mobile signal might be a downside, though I suppose it's part of the appeal for those wanting to unplug. All in all, with a solid 4.6 rating from plenty of happy visitors, I'd say it's worth a go if you're in Bishop Auckland – just keep expectations realistic and maybe skip it if you're after something fancy. It's that kind of place where the good times usually outweigh the rare slip-ups, making it a solid choice for a casual night out.

Cons
-
There have been a few mishaps with food and drinks, like one disappointing meal with an off-tasting pint and a dodgy chicken parmo that left a bad aftertaste – literally!
-
It can feel a bit pricey, with one bill coming to £34 for what wasn't up to scratch, so it's worth keeping an eye on the value.
-
No WiFi and patchy mobile signal might put some off if you're after a connected catch-up, though others see it as a charming throwback.
-
The operating hours seem a tad inconsistent, which could catch you out if you're planning a visit on a whim.

Great little Pub great atmosphere friendly staff and they sell hawkstone
Just went for a lunchtime pint to try out Hawkestone beer. Great old fashioned pub, quiet, friendly landlady, and an actual wood-burning open fire. Just what the doctor ordered. No WiFi and poor mobile signal - perfect.
First pint tasted off then Probably worst chicken parmo we've ever had didn't even take left overs for dog. Real chips tho... well worth £34! 🤢🤮
A very traditional and 'local' feel pub. We stopped in for Sunday lunch as a group of 3 adults and 2 kids. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. The Sunday roasts were delicious, as were the desserts. Kids had burgers which were fresh and homemade. Top notch!
What an evening we got here. We came to the place before everyone else. Got a lovely service when we ordered the food. The place is extraordinary with an English Heritage of the English Pub Soul. Cosy and decorative with Ship decoration. When the food came it was the best pizza we have had also served by the cook. Then we had an excellent evening watching the thrilling game against Spain, the local community were here and put a golden touch to the feeling over the place. And with this game, England next time it's coming home.
Thank you so very much for the evening and the lovely service for me and my family.
