About This Pub
Ah, The Saxon Horn – it's one of those classic pubs that really captures the heart of Rainham, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got that warm, unpretentious charm where the staff go out of their way to make you feel at home, and the beers are both tasty and easy on the wallet. I reckon it's a brilliant spot if you're after an affordable drink and fancy soaking up some local banter, especially since it's open every day from 11 until 11 at night. On the flip side, though, it's not for everyone; a few folks have mentioned it can feel a bit standoffish if you're not a regular, with limited drink choices mainly revolving around lagers, and the odd disruptive moment that might spoil the mood. Overall, if you're up for a genuine, down-to-earth pub crawl in the area, it's worth a go – just keep your expectations realistic and maybe pop in with a mate to ease into the vibe.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are really friendly and welcoming, which makes popping in for a pint feel like chatting with old mates.
-
Beers are good quality and surprisingly cheap, perfect if you're looking for a budget-friendly night out without skimping on taste.
-
It's a proper local spot with that authentic community vibe, ideal for folks in the Rainham area who want a traditional pub experience.
Cons
-
The atmosphere can feel a bit unwelcoming for newcomers, almost like you're intruding on a private gathering, so it might not be the best for first-timers.
-
Drink options are pretty limited, mostly sticking to lagers with not much variety, which could disappoint if you're after something more adventurous.
-
There have been a few mentions of rowdy behaviour or uncomfortable interactions, so it's not always the most relaxed spot for a quiet evening.

Proper Rainham Pub, a place you wouldn’t take your mother in law , but where would ya.
Ok average pub not much too much variety of beer mainly lager. Not too many pubs to choose from in Rainham so choice limited goes a local drink.
This is strictly a locals pub, mainly for those who live in the Upminster Road North area of Rainham. I can appreciate the opinions of those who have wandered in here for the first time and have found the atmosphere a wee bit hostile. However, that goes with the turf in a community pub like the Saxon. Once you get to know these locals, they are fine and even chatty. The décor and appearance of the pub is somewhat bland and the drinks prices are on the expensive side. At the end of the day, it is what it is: A proper Locals' Local!!
OK place, did not stay long. Got harassed by a drunk who would not stop talking to us when he was not wanted. When he came over and put his fresh pint of shandy on the table, we decided to leave.
Now looking at some of the reviews i understand, this is not a wetherspoons, it is not all glossy and yes it could benefit from a refurb but as long as the staff are friendly, which they are and the beer is good (and cheep😄) it doesn't really matter, the way the pub trade is these days i can understand a refurb may be unaffordable, i guess for it to be open at all, we should be glad. Has a great pool table. To the other poster, or anyone else interested, i have never known this to be a members only pub, though there is a sign saying so behind the bar, ive never had a problem and am not a regular i guess its similar to 'the management reserve the right not to serve...
