About This Pub

Ah, The Rose of Lancaster – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with that cosy, community vibe that's hard to beat, especially if you're popping in for a pint and a chat. The food really steals the show; their menus are packed with fresh, seasonal dishes that pair brilliantly with their range of award-winning ales – I'm thinking of tucking into a hearty Sunday roast with all the trimmings, or grabbing one of those midweek lunch deals for a bargain. The staff are absolute stars, always buzzing around to ensure everything's just right, and it's nice to see a spot that's dog-friendly in parts, making it welcoming for everyone. On the flip side, though, that dress code after 5pm can be a bit of a downer if you're not prepared; it might come across as a tad formal for a casual night out, and I've heard a couple of stories where it put a dampener on things. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed get-together, as long as you plan ahead and dress the part – I'd say it's worth a visit for the atmosphere and grub alone, but keep those little niggles in mind for a balanced experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff and landlord are incredibly friendly and always on hand to make sure you're having a great time, which really adds to the welcoming atmosphere.
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious pub classics, seasonal menus, and those unbeatable Sunday roasts with unlimited Yorkshire puds and gravy.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of award-winning ales and beers, like JW Lees Bitter and Manchester Pale Ale, perfect for enjoying in the beer garden on a sunny day.
  • It's got that real community pub feel, right in the heart of Chadderton, with a chilled vibe and even a dog-friendly area in the vault half.
  • The place is well-managed, with options like pub lunches and special deals that make it ideal for midweek catch-ups or family outings.
Cons
  • There's a dress code in place after 5pm that bans things like tracksuits and trainers, which might feel a bit strict and could put some folks off if they're not dressed up.
  • A few minor gripes from visitors include things like bacon being a tad overcooked, though it's not a deal-breaker overall.

The go to pub in North Manchester. Friendly and comfortable atmosphere with charm and very good food . The landlord is friendly and is on the ball constantly, walking about looking after customers. The vault half allows dogs in, it's just a chilled pub. Staff are very friendly too.

615pm on a Friday night called in for some tea . I was wearing all black under armour top and bottoms and adidas trek all black no markings or names . Restaurant had two people in it as I enquired about a table I was REFUSED ! Said no tracksuits or trainers . I am 60 years of age 🙄 so off we went . Big mistake I eat out a lot and tip well won’t be back. Your a Lee’s pub with a delusion of grandeur ! In Oldham wow heard it all now . Won’t be back Reply by landlord now I understand and agree he is correct so will change my review to 4 stars Apologies I was wrong in this instance Added to this review was a recent visit when I was dressed appropriately for this pub . Ordered food quick happy staff service not an issue . Pub spotless and obviously kept well . Food though although well presented was just ok not good enough to be on our must go again list . Saw what I can only assume is the landlord in a JW Lees bodywarner chatting with a customer who wanted to book . I’d be concerned large eating space place was empty . Yes nice pub , not cheap , well run but food is average . Example 3 cheese cauliflower cheese an additional charge but boiled florets with a bit of cheese sprinkled on and microwaved isn’t proper food . Landlord get in your car pop up to the church inn uppermill, old pub, not that clean , people rough as toast wear what they want .! But boy is the food spot on . Revisit 8/4/25 Went for a quick drink and lunch today not been in quite a while so gave it a go. Starters belly pork was amazing tasty and fresh but the chilli cheese nachos not so good I’m afraid insipid liquid cheese and a spoonful of chilli with stale nachos not a good start but have to say belly pork perfect . Fish and chips to follow one small one large . Asked could they be lightly battered and they was perfect very nice indeed . Chips frozen but edible. Fish very good . Upgrade of a slice of bread and butter and chip shop curry good but when are restaurants going to start taking butter out of the fridge they cannot be spread much too hard . Overall great lunch . Nachos and chips disappointing but fish and pork belly plus the Manchester craft lager excellent. Nearby Lees’ pubs in Rochdale I recently reviewed should take note Served by young man behind the bar very helpful and friendly and the chap who has to be the landlord very welcoming and never stopped once when we was in replenishment of soap in toilets rushing about inside and out this guy works hard. Spotless faultless pub run very well , food quality gone up one star from last visit
