About This Pub
Ah, the Rose & Crown – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? Tucked away in Thurnby, it's got this lovely historical feel that's bang on for a cosy evening or a sunny afternoon in the garden. I love how the staff are always so cheerful and attentive; they really make the place shine, and the food's a winner too, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients that give everything that extra touch of quality. Whether it's the traditional dishes or those cracking deals like the fish and chips offer, it's spot on for a bite without breaking the bank. Plus, with a great range of beers and ciders on tap, including local favourites, and plenty of outdoor space for a chinwag with mates or even bringing the dog along, it's got that community spirit nailed. On the flip side, though, it's a bit disappointing if you're veggie – the options are limited and can come across as a bit basic, and I've heard a few grumbles about the prices not always matching up to what's on the plate. All in all, it's a solid spot for a pint and a chat, but worth keeping in mind if you're after more choice on the menu.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely and always friendly, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
It's got that wonderful historical charm from its 16th-century roots, with a beautiful atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxing catch-up.
-
The food is spot on – freshly prepared with locally sourced ingredients, like meat from nearby farms and fresh fish, and it's great value, especially with deals like two fish and chips for £20.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of real ales, guest beers, and ciders, including local brews and options for drivers.
-
Loads of outdoor seating with gorgeous views, plus it's super dog-friendly with treats for your furry mates, and a big car park makes it easy to pop by.
Cons
-
There aren't many vegetarian options on the menu, which might leave some folks feeling a bit short-changed if they're after something more exciting than basic chips and veggies.
-
Some meals can feel a tad pricey for what you get, like paying £12 for a simple cheese salad roll that doesn't quite live up to the hype.

Absolutely stunning staff, historical venue and beautiful atmosphere. I would definitely be back as the food was delicious and fantastic value for money
Beautiful setting outside on a sunny day with the most gorgeous view. Staff always friendly and so are the locals there. Prices for food is reasonable and 2 for £20 fish and chips is a bargain lunch. Really nice place to chill, relax and have a good catch up. Highly recommend.
There are very few vegetarian options on the menu.
I didn't want to eat chips, veggie sausage and peas/ beans that I can eat for nothing at home
£12 is a lot to pay for a basic meal.
I opted for a mature cheese salad roll with chips and coleslaw.
It came.
I wasn't offered a choice of fillings as stated on the menu.
It contained 4 triangular pieces of what looked like Kraft Cheese slices
A green garden salad mix
and one slice of a Beef tomato
Which isn't even a salad ingredient.
And an egg cup sized portion of coleslaw.
No cucumber, onion or butter on the roll
which was rock hard!
I'd cut it half anyway
But only had about 3 bites out of one half.
It was rock hard and I was concerned about my teeth!
Inedible.
I do need to add that the rest of my family enjoyed their meat meals.
Your vegetarian options are awful.
Amazing historic pub perched on the very edge of the city of Leicester. It’s in a peaceful commuter village that leads on to tracts of green walking country and an undeveloped east of the county. Well worth a visit on your way to higher Leicestershire.
Really lovely traditional pub serving excellent food. Reasonable prices. Lots of outdoor seating and a very large carpark. Will definitely visit again.
