About This Pub
Ah, The Robert Shaw – it's one of those reliable Wetherspoons spots that you can always count on for a budget-friendly night out in Bolton. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got that classic pub charm with a solid selection of cask ales and a prime spot in the town centre, making it ideal for a quick pint or a meal with friends without breaking the bank. I love how they throw in extras like coffee refills and affordable breakfasts that score high on value – one reviewer even raved about their vegan options and generous portions for the price. The staff seem to be on the ball, especially if you swing by mid-week for a hassle-free experience. On the flip side, it's not all roses; a few folks have had rough experiences with the food, like underwhelming burgers or undercooked bits that didn't quite hit the mark, even if you expect it to be on the cheaper end. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.1, it's clear most people walk away happy, but I'd say it's best to keep expectations realistic and maybe stick to the drinks if you're after something foolproof. All in all, it's a decent go-to for a laid-back evening, but keeping an eye on those food reviews could save you from any surprises.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got a cracking selection of cask ales, perfect if you're after a proper pint in a traditional pub setting.
-
The location is spot on, right in the heart of Westhoughton with a car park just nearby, making it dead easy to pop in after a drive.
-
Ambience is lovely and welcoming, especially for a casual catch-up with mates – feels just right for a relaxed evening.
-
Value for money is brilliant; you can get refills on coffee and enjoy affordable breakfasts that leave you feeling chuffed.
-
Service is generally spot on, particularly mid-week when things run smoothly and staff are friendly and efficient.
Cons
-
Food quality can be a bit hit or miss – some dishes like burgers or chicken melts have been described as tiny and undercooked, which is a shame for a quick bite.
-
Portions might not always live up to expectations, even for the budget prices, leaving you wanting a bit more on the plate.
-
Limited options for certain preferences, like no wholemeal bread for breakfast, which could disappoint if you're watching what you eat.
-
It might not hold up as well during busier times, with potential for slower service or inconsistencies that could put a dampener on things.

A good selection of cask ales on the bar. In a good location in the centre of town, with a car park just behind.
Went tonight, food was absolutely shocking. Burger was tiny.and had 6 chips. I know it's cheap food...but not that cheap. My friend got bbq chicken melt. It was awful undercooked bacon, a dehydrated mushroom with fork marks in. And I'm not even going to mention the dried out pizza. Think they should start using smaller plates, as there was more plate than food.
My friends took me on a date here, and I loved it. The ambience was great. I absolutely loved the cappuccino, and you get 3 refills 🤣😅 even though I was okay with just a cup.

Great food great staff. I can't comment at peak times but mid week service is fast . We order on the app & it's so easy. The only criticism is that they don't offer wholemeal bread with any of the breakfast items. Such a simple addition would make a big difference to those that can't eat white bread .
