About This Pub
Ah, The Railway Tavern, it's one of those pubs that just feels like a hidden gem in Urmston, Manchester. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this wonderful old-school charm that really draws you in – think Sam Smith's brews that hit the spot without breaking the bank, and a cosy atmosphere where you can actually hear yourself think. I love how it's got that community spirit, with a dartboard for a bit of fun and a book exchange that adds a nice touch of quirkiness. Plus, the no-phones policy is brilliant; it encourages proper chats and makes you feel like you're in a different era, which is a real plus in my book. On the flip side, though, it can be pretty quiet sometimes, especially on a Friday night when you might fancy a bit more buzz, and that old-fashioned feel could come across as dated to some. It's not got much of an online presence, so tracking down details might take a bit of effort, and with the business not being claimed, you wonder if it's getting the attention it deserves. Overall, if you're after an honest, straightforward spot for a pint and a catch-up, it's worth a go – just keep your expectations in check for a more laid-back experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer is spot on – especially that Old Brewery Bitter, which folks rave about as being strong and tasty, and it's all at a very reasonable price.
-
It's got a lovely cosy and quiet vibe, making it ideal for a chilled-out chat without any distractions.
-
There's a real local feel here, like stepping into a proper community hub with things like a dartboard and a book exchange to keep things interesting.
-
No phones allowed means you can actually have a proper conversation, which is a refreshing change and adds to the old-school charm.
Cons
-
It can be a bit quiet or even dead on certain nights, so if you're after a lively atmosphere, you might find it a tad underwhelming.
-
The place has that old-fashioned style, which is great if you love tradition, but it might not suit everyone who prefers something more modern.
-
With no website or online presence, it's not the easiest to get the latest info on, which could be a hassle if you're planning a visit.
-
Being unclaimed on Google suggests it might not be as well-maintained or updated as some other spots, so things could feel a bit hit or miss.

After about six pints of Old Brewery Bitter, I was ready for home. Its a lot strong! Look at my other reviews to see where I've been!
Cosy quiet little pub. Very reasonably priced nice beer too
Sam smiths. Chilled out pub with local vibe! Also a dartboard and book exchange. No phones. 🍻
OK so it's not going to everyone's favourite pub. A bit old fashioned and it was dead on a Friday night when I last visited just myself and a friend and two other blokes. It's a proper local. I've been in after work and it's full of people who all know each other. No mobile phones or electronic devices allowed (Sam Smiths brewery rules). They do however serve very reasonably priced beer of which I can only vouch for the dark mild which is excellent.
Nice, old-style Sam Smith's pub. You know the story!? Very good pint of O B bitter, stout was good and the cider too. Excellent service from Gaynor. Thanks 😊.
