About This Pub
Ah, The Punch Bowl in York is one of those timeless spots that just pulls you in with its centuries-old charm and stories of ghosts and political intrigue – it's like stepping into a piece of history without leaving the high street. I have to say, the staff really make the place shine; they're so approachable and quick to sort you out, whether you're just popping in for a pint or settling in for a meal. The beer selection is brilliant, with some top-quality ales that go down a treat, and the food doesn't disappoint either – those pies and fish and chips are proper comforting choices that hit the spot after a day of exploring. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect; it can get absolutely buzzing, especially in the evenings, so you might find yourself waiting to get in or squeezed at a table, and the cosy layout means it feels a tad tight when it's full. Still, for anyone keen on a genuine pub experience with a mix of history and good times, it's well worth a visit – just maybe aim for a quieter moment if you prefer a more relaxed chat over your drink.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic atmosphere is absolutely charming, making you feel like you've stepped back in time with its Tudor design and rich history dating back centuries.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and efficient, always on hand with a warm welcome and attentive service that makes you feel right at home.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of beers and ales, including some cracking Nicholson's options that are perfect for anyone after a proper pint.
-
The food is spot on, with British classics like pies and fish and chips that are tasty and satisfying, especially if you're in the mood for hearty pub grub.
-
It's in a prime spot in York's city centre, close to other attractions, making it ideal for a quick stop or a full evening out.
Cons
-
It can get really busy, particularly during peak times, so you might end up queuing or struggling to find a seat, which can put a damper on things.
-
The space is quite cosy and intimate, which is lovely but means it might feel a bit cramped when it's crowded, especially if you're after some breathing room.
-
Some folks might miss out on the log fire if it's not obvious, so the warmth and ambiance could vary depending on where you're sitting.

Efficient Staff and a friendly Welcome in this historic building. Great Beer selection. There must be a cosy log fire somewhere..... But I didn't spot it.
Good menu choice with Pies being a specialty.
As an update on last visit..... Excellent Customer Service (28.05.25).
Very cool and original pub vibe. The building doesn’t look like it should be standing, but it perseveres fighting gravity. Staff were friendly and attentive and ensured my wife’s gluten intolerance was catered to, which was appreciated.
Food was spot on and I really enjoyed my fish and chips. Good simple food done well.
This was a lovely pub for drinking, with a beautiful Tudor design! The lighting helps bring this out, counter is well presented and staff were welcoming. I enjoyed a pint of a Nicholson's ale, relaxing at a smooth table!
A lovely historic pub right in the centre of York and very close to other tourist attractions. The interior of this pub has been preserved very well and stepping inside really does transport you back a few centuries to the times of Guy Fawkes and Dick Turpin.
The service was excellent, friendly, attentive and couldn't do enough for you. I feel like the prices were also reasonable given what we ate and drank. Possibly my only complaint would've been the pie we ordered - the filling was delicious and the presentation was also nice, however it seemed like the pie lacked a pastry base and sides inside the pot it was served in (so essentially it was pie filling covered with a pastry top). Don't get me wrong, it was tasty and even enough for two to share, but I expected something slightly better considering the price and the standard of everything else.
However all said, I enjoyed my visit.
Came for a drink, first visit. Gets very busy with people queuing to get in at opening. Not a huge place and quite cosy and intimate. Good choice of drinks at reasonable prices. Service friendly. Lots of history to the place as you'd expect from an old pub in York.
