About This Pub
Ah, The Pomfret Arms in Northampton is one of those places that really pulls you in with its charm – think brilliant grub like their legendary Sunday roasts, packed with meaty or veggie options and that gravy everyone's talking about, all set in a beautiful garden that's just made for lazy afternoons with a pint. It's dead welcoming too, being super dog-friendly and even bike-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out for a casual day. The vibe's spot on with music and events keeping things lively, and it's no surprise it's got such a strong reputation overall. But, let's be honest, it's not all sunshine and roses; I've seen a few gripes about the service being a tad off, like staff who seem distracted or not all that polite, and that can make you feel like an afterthought rather than a valued guest. Plus, the seating can get a bit squished, with long waits that might have you twiddling your thumbs, and some folks have felt pushed out too quickly. Still, if you're after good food and a relaxed spot, it's worth giving it a try – just go in with your eyes open and maybe plan for a quieter visit.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on, especially those Sunday roasts – plenty of options and all the trimmings make it a real treat.
-
It's got a cracking garden that's perfect for enjoying a drink in the sunshine or some alfresco dining when the weather's nice.
-
Being dog and bike-friendly adds a lovely touch; it's great for popping in with your four-legged friend or after a cycle.
-
The atmosphere is chilled and lively with music and events going on, making it feel like a hidden gem in Northampton.
Cons
-
Service can be a bit hit or miss, with some reports of staff being rude or inattentive, which puts a damper on things.
-
The seating feels cramped and basic at times, leading to queues and that uncomfortable kindergarten vibe some have mentioned.
-
Waiting times for food and drinks can drag on, and you might feel rushed out once you're done, which isn't ideal for a relaxed pub visit.
-
Recent experiences show inconsistencies, so while the overall rating's high, not every trip might live up to the hype.

Worst service I’ve ever experienced from the girl in earmuffs as mentioned in other reviews. Glaring and didn’t even greet us - just came over to take our order and we hadn’t even taken our coats off. So awkward, whilst she was overtly flirting and jumping around with a group of men dining on another table. They were the only other people eating yet it took 1.5 hours to come. Food was burnt and flavourless like it had been reheated. Shouldn’t of even paid for the meal.
Booked here due to the recommendations on the food. The food was absolutely delicious, one of the best roasts in Northamptonshire. Service a total shambles. Waitress tended to us in a coat and headphones. No politeness about her at all. We felt like we were an inconvenience. I asked for a drinks menu and was passed a wine list with practically every wine crossed off the list. Waiting time was horrendous. Pretty much all staff serving today were rude to the guests. Waitress pretty much threw the plates and bowls at guests.
The food however is amazing. If you have a spare 5 hours due to slow service I'd definitely recommend
Not very friendly pub. Went to meet family in the pub as it was within walking distance from the station. First no tables were available, so we decided to go elsewhere and then were offered a table just before we were about to leave. Waited ages for the food and although it was okay we were then rushed off the table as soon as we finished eating. The locals obviously have more say in how it’s run than the owner. I am disappointed that we stayed and not went elsewhere instead.
Why does this place cramp itself in some tiny shop having people queuing out the door ?? Basic seating like you are kindergarten, it giving you don't like your customers You are lucky £5+ milkshake are banging Mk Centre is like a warehouse zero heating I see you again in t-shirt weather.
Perfect pub for a cosy Sunday roast and a few drinks. Wonderful atmosphere, great garden for the warmer months, dog friendly and the most phenomenal Sunday roast with plenty of meat and non meat options, all the trimmings and a gravy (that's surprisingly vegan!) to write home about.
