About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Old Horse – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper gem in Leicester, with its cosy nooks and that welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to settle in for the evening. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are generally brilliant, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, which really elevates the whole experience. The drinks selection is spot on too, with plenty of real ales and craft ciders to choose from, and the food doesn't disappoint – I'm talking about mouthwatering dishes like the Steak and Ale Pie that's cooked to perfection, or a simple jacket spud that's done just right for a comforting meal. It's perfect for popping in with friends or family for a relaxed catch-up. But, to be fair, it's not all roses; there have been a few grumbles about the service not being as consistent as it could be, with some folks mentioning recent changes that haven't sat well, like perhaps a shift in management that's left things a bit off-kilter. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.4, it's clear this place gets more right than wrong, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep your expectations realistic for a balanced night out.

Cons
  • There have been a few reports of inconsistent service or management issues lately, which might put a dampener on things for some visitors.
  • It seems like the place has had ups and downs over time, so it might not always live up to its best on every visit.

A gem of a traditional pub on the outskirts of Leicester City Centre. I have occasionally visited this pub over many years and it never disappoints. Great atmosphere with a really warm welcome by Matt who always has a smile, some good banter and provides excellent customer service. There are a wide range of drinks on offer including some nice Everards real ales. The food is excellent, with particular reference to the Sunday lunch. Prices are competitive and there is a small car park. The front and rear outside areas are large and sun traps. Highly recommended.

A former 19th century Coaching Inn on the outskirts of Leicester City centre. I had the Steak and Ale Pie with Mash and Peas. Quite possibly the best Steak and Ale Pie I have had. The pie was cooked to perfection, the pastry flaky and the meat tender. The vegetables were also cooked well, and had a nice flavour to them. The meal was hot, delicious, and also very filling! The service was excellent! The staff were very welcoming and friendly. I was even food checked halfway through my meal. The pub was very aesthetically decorated with posters and trinkets. As mentioned, the Inn's history goes back 200 years, and you can see the old Stables at the back of the Inn (although they are no longer functioning as Stables). Would definitely recommend this place!

My old July 24th, review was: 5 stars: I am a regular, i enjoy the selection of craft ciders and real ales, definitely a place to be when you need a relaxing moment with your family, with your friends or just alone! Update Dec 2024: Honest opinion...Unfortunately this old landmark of Leicester has lost its character...craft Ciders and Ale beers replaced by standard cheap stuff sold overpriced.. rotisserie chicken replaced by an industrial coffee machine...and proper British food with sandwiches and packed crisps? Not a special REAL ALE pub anymore.., just a standard, chain, usual pub!

Absolutely what a pub should be like in my opinion. Warm, welcoming, full of curiosities and joyful little touches. Moved my eldest daughter to university, and it was a beautiful spot to add to the memories of this weekend! Plus, the jacket spud with chilli and cheese was lovely, which was a nice bonus!

Travelled from Lancashire for a show and stopped at the The old horse. What a wonderful place. The staff were attentive and very polite. A great selective of local ales and well know lagers. The food was perfect, steak spot on and we'll presented as was the gammon. Brilliant pub with an very pleasant atmosphere and a wide eclectic collection of "artifacts" including a coffin. I will definitely be back again.
