About This Pub

You know, chatting about The Old Harkers Arms feels like recommending a favourite local haunt – it's got that proper old boozer charm with a fresh twist, right in the heart of Chester. I love how they've nailed the food side of things; whether you're tucking into a hearty Sunday roast or something a bit more adventurous like wild mushroom soup, it's all made with quality ingredients and served up just right. The drinks are spot on too, with a great range of cask ales and whiskies that keep drawing people back. What really stands out is the atmosphere – it's so sociable and buzzing, ideal for a relaxed lunch or dinner where you might end up chatting with new faces. The staff are brilliant, always on hand with a smile and quick service that makes the whole experience feel effortless. But, to be fair, it's not without its downsides; things can get a bit expensive, especially if you're eyeing up the sides or portions that don't quite match the price tag, and it does fill up quickly, so planning ahead is key if you don't want to miss out. Overall, it's a gem for anyone after a proper pub outing, but maybe best saved for when you're in the mood to treat yourself.

Called on spec for my wife's birthday. Wanted somewhere nice and this did not disappoint. Service was as good as could be. The different staff during the evening were all very attentive and friendly. Food was superb, same with the drinks. Beer, wine and brandy all served properly. A fantastic atmosphere with couples and groups all talking chatting but with total respect for others. Great location on the canal and large outdoor area. All very clean. We shall go again on our next trip to the area.

Stunning pub. We booked a table here for dinner and it’s a good job we did because the main part of the pub was heaving. Thankfully, they have a small, quaint area for dining bookings, which is where we were sat. The food was unreal. I had the wild mushroom and tarragon soup for starters. It was packed full of flavour and had a perfect consistency. The black pudding sausage roll looked, and apparently tasted, incredible. The braised shoulder of lamb was cooked beautifully, falling apart with the slightest tug. The gravy was so rich and complimented the lamb well. The veg had a good crunch to it, and the carrots were sweet, which worked well with the gravy. It was my first time trying dauphinoise potatoes and I wasn’t a big fan. Were they unpleasant? No. Were they cooked badly? I don’t think so. I likely just don’t like dauphinoise potatoes. The sticky toffee pudding was nice and didn’t seem to be bought in, as desserts so often are. Service was very friendly throughout, although towards the end, as the main pub got packed, we struggled to get the attention of a waitress as they were occupied with that part of the pub. We can’t wait to go back here and sample whatever is on the menu next time we’re in Chester!

The food was decent. But I don't recommend the pulled beef croquettes. The atmosphere was lovely, the service was really nice and fast. Just expensive for the amount you get. But honestly lovely experience and would go again.

Had a lovely sunday roast here with my family. The vegan wellington was so nice, and my family all enjoyed the beef. Great portion sizes and extra gravy available at no charge! Sides of pigs in blankets and stuffing were a little pricey but big portion. Everyone super happy and will definitely come back!

What an amazing pub and restaurant. The service, beer and food is top notch snd added to the beautiful surroundings, it makes for a brilliant experience. There’s even table service for beers and our server Owen was attentive and friendly and great at his job, which topped off an enjoyable visit perfectly.
