About This Pub
Ah, The Old Chapel – it's one of those Wetherspoons spots that really stands out, tucked away in Darwen with its roots as an old chapel, giving it that extra bit of charm and history. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food's a real winner most visits, with a solid selection of dishes that are cooked just right and hit the spot after a long day. The interior is something special too; imagine settling into a spacious area spread over two levels, complete with stunning stained glass and even an art gallery vibe – plus, those countryside views from upstairs are perfect for a cheeky pint and a chat. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing; it can get packed to the gills, making it tough to find a table without someone else nabbing more space than they need, and the wait for drinks might leave you twiddling your thumbs longer than you'd like. Then there's the odd run-in with a less-than-cheery staff member, which is a shame because the rest seem lovely. Overall, it's a solid choice for us pub goers looking for good value and a unique atmosphere, but I'd say pop in during quieter times to make the most of it – gives a balanced experience without the frustrations.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is generally spot on – plenty of options and well-cooked, making it a reliable choice for a hearty meal.
-
It's got this fantastic, unique interior in a converted chapel, with spacious seating on two levels and some lovely stained glass windows that give it real character.
-
Friendly staff most of the time, and the views from the top floor over the local countryside are just brilliant for a relaxing sit-down.
-
The building itself is stunning – they've done a cracking job restoring it, and it has a welcoming vibe that makes you want to come back.
Cons
-
Seating can be a right hassle when it's busy, with tables often hogged by folks who don't need the space, leaving you scrambling for a spot.
-
Drinks service might drag on a bit, with long waits that can put a dampener on things even if you're not in a rush.
-
Every now and then, you might run into a grumpy staff member who's not having the best day, which can sour the atmosphere.
-
Some dishes, like that mixed grill steak, haven't always hit the mark, so it's worth double-checking your order.

Very impressed with this wetherspoons, good food and friendly staff. Large and unique style interior on two levels with plenty of seating and spacing between tables. Great views of the local countryside from the top floor. Will visit again!
Food is very good most of the time. Plenty of options and very well cooked. Unfortunately the seating can be an issue as it's regularly full or taken up by inconsiderate people sitting on larger tables than needed. Drinks to table can be an issue as the wait can be very long for no apparent reason, even when the place is empty.
Another Wetherspoon, another unique carpet. I would give it 6 stars if I could for the simple reason that the ladies toilets are on the ground floor! Men's are still upstairs though. This Spoons is an old church, and has some stained glass windows, and strangely enough an art gallery of posters! Great upstairs area to sit too. There's a massive bird statue just across the road which is pretty cool.
Absolutely rude staff member clearly hates working there so I would sack her she calls customer liars and walks around with a miserable face maybe she should work Karen's diner ! But the one with the piercings was lovely meal was nice bar one of our steaks on the mix grill looked like a cats ball bag tried to tell miss miserable but she called us a liar 🤣🤣✊🏼💦
Visited while passing through Darwen. What an absolute stunning building! They have done a fantastic job and shows in this majestic building and its interior. It doesn't feel like an old chapel but has more of a library feel about it with its floor above, where the kitchen and further seating areas are situated. Also upstairs infront of the stunning stained glass windows, there is artwork and paintings on display which add character to this historic building. We never dined here so can't comment but the hot chocolate was a delight. Lots of open floor space with tables and also comfy couches. Parking is limited outside but there are a few just outside if you are lucky. Nice visit and would recommend.
