About This Pub

Ah, The Old Bell Hotel – it's one of those places that just warms your heart the moment you walk in, with its rich history dating back to 1650 as a coaching inn, making it feel like a proper slice of Derby's past. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely love the old-world charm and peaceful surroundings, ideal for sinking into a comfy spot with a drink in hand. The service stands out as a real highlight; stories of impeccably dressed staff going out of their way to serve up a perfect pint or handle weddings and events with such friendliness and flexibility really paint a picture of a welcoming spot. It's brilliant for special occasions too, with rave reviews about the delicious food, generous portions, and entertaining nights that leave you wanting more. On the flip side, it might not be the go-to if you're after a vast selection of beers – missing out on classics like Guinness could be a downer for some. And let's not forget, the operating hours seem a tad muddled, which might catch you out if you're planning a spontaneous visit. All in all, it's a gem worth checking out for a relaxed pint or a memorable event, but keep those little niggles in mind for a balanced experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm of The Old Bell Hotel is absolutely delightful; it's like stepping back in time to a classic coaching inn, full of character and a real sense of history that makes every visit feel special.
  • The service is spot on – from the friendly staff who go the extra mile, like fetching a specific beer from the barrel, to handling events and weddings with such warmth and efficiency, it's clear they know how to make you feel welcome.
  • It's a fantastic spot for events, whether it's a lively evening out, a wedding breakfast, or even private hires; the reviews rave about the great entertainment, delicious food with generous portions, and that relaxed, flexible vibe.
  • Being right in the heart of Derby, it's super convenient for a quick pint or a full night out, and the overall atmosphere is peaceful and comfortable, perfect for unwinding.
Cons
  • The beer selection isn't the most extensive; one chap mentioned they didn't have Guinness on tap, which might disappoint if you're after a wider range of options.
  • There seems to be a bit of confusion with the opening hours, as the schedule lists multiple times for Sundays, which could leave you scratching your head about when it's actually open beyond the typical midday start.

We had our wedding breakfast in the Old Bell’s Grand Regency Ballroom and it was just perfect. The staff were helpful and friendly in the run-up and on the day, the food was delicious and with good sized portions, and everything was very relaxed and flexible. The chef was very open to adapting the standard menu options to cater for different dietary requirements, with delicious results! The whole occasion was elegant, well run and great fun. Thank you!

I called in on Friday afternoon for a beer. The very pleasant lady who served me was immaculately dressed and most pleasant. I asked for the Bass and she went and got it for me from the barrel. Superb service. I will certainly go again. 10/10
