About This Pub

Ah, The Shakespeare – it's one of those places in Derby that really pulls you in with its vibrant energy and fresh take on a classic pub. From what I've gathered from the reviews and their website, it's all about enjoying premium cocktails and a solid menu of American-style grub, served up by a team that's genuinely warm and attentive. I love how they've kept that original interior vibe, making it feel unique and full of character, and the outside area sounds ideal for soaking up the sun with a cold one in hand. It's got that fun atmosphere with live singers and plenty going on, which is brilliant for a lively night out. But, let's be honest, it's not without its downsides – the music can crank up a bit too high, making conversations tricky, and on a busy Saturday, you might find yourself queuing for drinks because the bar staff are stretched thin. Plus, if you're a fan of real ale, you might be a tad let down as they've opted for keg options only. Overall, though, it's a solid spot for a good time with friends, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just go in with realistic expectations and maybe book ahead to avoid any hassles.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing, with live music and a fun vibe that makes you want to stay for another round.
  • They've got a cracking selection of cocktails and drinks, including alcohol-free options, perfect for a night out with mates.
  • The staff are top-notch – friendly, helpful, and really make you feel welcome, even when it's packed.
  • The food is spot on, serving up delicious American-style dishes that hit the spot, especially with that sunny outside area for al fresco sipping.
  • It's got a unique, trendy feel with a preserved original interior that gives it real character and charm.
Cons
  • The music can get a bit too loud at times, which might make it hard to chat without shouting over the tunes.
  • During busy evenings, there aren't always enough staff behind the bar, leading to waits that can put a damper on things.
  • It's a shame they've gone all keg with no real ale on offer, which might disappoint those after a traditional pint.
  • The layout feels a tad maze-like, so you might end up wandering around a bit to find your way or your table.

It was Saturday evening so it was busy. More staff at the bar would have been handy. I found the music a little loud and overbearing but it suited some other people. A good selection of drinks including alcohol free options. A very vibrant pub with plenty going on. I would visit again when in the area.

I used to frequent The Shakespeare over 30 years ago and it was a nice pub, good location and some nice ales. The newly refurbished and re-instated version is very nice but has no real ale, just a row of keg pumps. Personally I think this is a real shame and without decent beer I won't be going back.

A completely different approach to a bar which is unique and furnished to a good quality. The staff are super friendly, polite and professional. Good music which leads to a fun atmosphere. The layout is a bit of a maze. I would suggest that maps for the layout of the building are printed on their beermats, as finding your way around can be a bit confusing. We didn't try the food but it looked and smelt amazing. Well worth a second visit.

Loved my visit to the Shakespeare! Unique venue, so happy they saved the original interior/exterior vibe. Food was excellent, posh pub comfort food, loved it. And every member of staff was friendly and helpful, and checked on us, despite it being a really busy Friday night. We were served by Luke who was awesome!!! Thank you!
