About This Pub
Ah, you know, if you're popping into Castleford for a bite or a bevvy, The Ninth Bar is one of those places that just hits the spot. It's got this charming vibe, all tied to the local Roman history, and they've done a cracking job refurbishing the spot into a cosy bar and kitchen. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is spot on – whether it's their Sunday roasts with heaps of fresh veg and gravy, or those tasty small plates that everyone's raving about. The drinks selection is bang on too, with plenty of choices for all tastes, including some top non-alcoholic picks that make it easy for anyone to join in. The team behind the bar are dead helpful and really make you feel at home, even squeezing folks in when they're fully booked, like on Mother's Day. It's not perfect, mind you; there was a quick note about one beef dish being a tad dry, but honestly, that's just a minor blip in an otherwise stellar lineup. All in all, it's a welcoming spot for a relaxed meal or a chinwag with friends, and with ratings as high as they've got, I'd say it's well worth checking out for a proper good time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely top-notch – think mouthwatering Sunday roasts, creative small plates, and even the best soup you've ever tasted, all packed with flavour.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to make sure everyone feels welcome, even when things are busy.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, from craft beers and cocktails to a brilliant range of non-alcoholic options, which is a real treat if you're driving or skipping the booze.
-
The atmosphere is quirky and cool, with a nod to local Roman history, making it a lovely spot to relax and catch up with mates in the heart of Castleford.
Cons
-
There was just one minor mention of a dish being a bit dry – like the beef in a Sunday roast – but it seems rare and didn't spoil the overall experience for that group.

They were fully booked Mother's day but squeezed us in. Service was fantastic and the food was amazing.
Lovely place, staff extremely friendly and helpful. Food was great, Sunday roast and fresh veg lost of gravy and extra given. Desserts and cheeseboard enjoyed by all out party. Just one really minor thing, my husband said his beef was a tad bit dry, but the turkey was lovely. Can recommend for sure. Nice little find. Wish them lots of success. Happy customers here.
We had a selection of small plates which were absolutely beautiful every plate done was 10 out of 10.
Service was prompt and attentive and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience will definitely be frequenting this place more it's a little gem in heart of castleford.
Me and my other half visited for the Sunday lunch today, I was surprised by the amount of choice for 0% drinks, not often your spoilt for choice there👌 we had the 3 courses think it was just shy of £28pp. The soup starter was the best soup I've ever tasted, so much flavours and creamy. I'm not just saying this, we travel to find a good Sunday Roasts. we have been all over. This place is better than the Boundary house, The blue bell, three horse shoes, queens told thatch in South Milford, I've sampled the lot. very lucky to have this just a walk away from home💚🙏, we then both had the sticky toffee pudding. I managed the lot it was so nice, there was a lot too but I skipped breakfast🤣 thankfully too. Very pleasantly surprised today. I'll be back that is for sure👌
The BEST food you will find!
Two recent dining experiences here. My wife and I went for dinner last week, she had the chicken Kiev I had the Steak and Ale pie..
I've never had nicer pie (hate to be one of those people that say "I'm in the industry" but) after 18 years of working at fine dining locations, pubs and restaurants, I've never found one that ticks all the boxes so well of great meat and perfect quantity, delicious pastry, beautiful double cooked chips (usually comes with mash which I've since tasted and is also epic) and incredible gravy. My wife had nothing but great things to say about the chicken Kiev also.
It was so so tasty and such a nice experience that we bought two more guests this Sunday for the Sunday lunch. I had the beef, divine. All the veg and yorkshire puddings were amazing, more of the amazing gravy..plenty of beef and every mouthful beautiful. My wife had the gammon and our guests had the pork. Everyone thought it was amazing and left so satisfied.
Great service on every visit from Ste, Martin, Aaron, Jane and James and the whole team.
Anyone who hasn't been here yet to try the incredible food and just as incredible drinks is missing out. The jewel of Casvegas!
